I didn't know what to post at first, but now I have found something very, very interesting to anyone (interested) in a career in milltary/firefighter/police/law enforcement/... or anyone who wants to get a good all round fitness level without focussing on only 1or2 aspects of fitness. I had lots of problems with finding a good program for all round fitness, making lots of mistakes wich led to injuries.
Recently I've discovered 'crossfit' and I like what I read about it. just google it and tell me what you think about it.
these guys climb ropes, do pull ups, lift weights, sprint, swim, cycle, run large distances,.... do all kinds of stuf. (gymnastics, powerlifting and cardio in every aspect)

I'm not trying to advertise, I'm just enthousiast, I haven't done any sports since I broke my ankle...

It's gained a lot of traction here in Iceland, I've been thinking to try it out

Crossfit is brilliant, I'm currently (roughly) following Crossfit main site and Crossfit Football. I've also been doing a few of these, it's all bodyweight stuff but it's tough:

Although they do a lot of pull ups and rope climbing, there's not a lot of running unless you follow Crossfit Endurance. Is this the sort of program someone should be following before turning up in Aubagne?

I'm no authority on the subject, just my two cents; but I think this would be a great way to prepare, since they're not using weights or machines in the training. It's all low-resistance, i hear (bodyweight). Anyone here experienced enough to confirm that this would be a good idea?

they are training with weights and there is endurance training in crossfit, crossfit is about all-round fitness, not specialising in running only or weightlifting/gymnastics/bodyweight/........ only. Its low-resistance as well as moderate and high ressistance... anyway, yes, this would be a good way to prepare yourself, but an oldschool training will probably be good enough. The reason I posted this, was to prevent people from getting injured after repeated movements and patterns. I got myself injured (on my calves, arms). If I had done crossfit, this wouldn't be the case. but if you don't understand the concept, the risks of getting injured are just as great...

Great post gusjeazer, glad to see a thread about CF! It truly is a great way to achieve a well-rounded fitness level. Some of the workouts seem insane and should be scaled or otherwise adapted to ones personal fitness level. Due to the high intensity it can be potentially dangerous. I, for one, got rhabdomyolysis (google if interested) a couple of years ago after a workout. The fun in that experience was quite limited.. :)

Some of the WOD:s (Workout Of the Day) require a great deal of equipment, but many of them are bodyweight only. The list Jack07 posted should pretty much cover them all.

This is emphatically untrue. Weights are used all the time. Deadlifts, Overhead Squats, Squats, Clean and Jerk, Powercleans, Hangcleans, etc. Also, Kettlebells etc.

Crossfit is supposed to improve GPP (General Physical Preparedness). You'll be stronger than a runner, faster than a powerlifter, etc.

Here in the Washington, DC area, these gyms are all over the place.

The program is better than nothing, but frankly, they veer a little into the unsafe side. The technique they use on some of their lifts is terrible. Also, pullups makes up a big part of their workouts, but they used what they call kipping pullups, if you were to try to pass the Legion (or any military) pullup test with kipping pullups they'd either yell or laugh at you. You can find video examples pretty readily on Youtube.

Also, more than a few gyms have pushed people too hard, too fast. Some of their clients have been hospitalized with Rhabdo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhabdomyolysis. In fact, one gym local to me ended up with a lawsuit because they pushed a Sailor so hard that he ended up in the hospital and medically discharged from the navy.

That said, I know for a fact that crossfit is fairly popular with much of the US SOF community.

You can try it yourself anytime you like, they always post a free Workout of the Day on crossfit.com.

I will say one thing for crossfit, the women who do crossfit have some of the most amazing bodies you'll ever see. I mean perfect.

To follow up on my first post, Crossfit is great for overall fitness; but for training to pass the entrance exam for the FFL, I strongly suggest that you forget about it and put 100% of your focus and effort into Stoeng's program. It's well thought-out and focuses on those things you will be tested on.

You should also consider that this program comes from a man who is a Green, one who has been there!

And edited to add that warnings about injuries are serious. In my view, you have to be in better shape than you are to even begin crossfit.

Stoeng's program is great, I was able to do large series of pull-ups, something I always had trouble with, but the repeated movements led to injuries and, by times, its a bit challenging to just jump into it. I think you should take his program as your basis, but mix some ellements of crossfit into it... to prevent injuries. An other problem was that I was able to run large distances, but when I ran the coopertest, my results were dreadfull. I want to be able to run large distances as wel as short ones. another problem with stoengs program is that you don't get rest, wich will become a problem after a couple of weeks/months. It is easy to push yourself too far, but if you get an injury/ feel a strange kind of pain, immidiatly stop the activity that caused it for at least a week. muscles take 2-3 days to recover, soft-tisue etc. take a lot longer.

Well, crossfit is great yeah, but you really need to listen to your body, more than on other trainings. It's very easy to injure yourself or to overtrain, and again, rest and food are very important factors.

You must be the party crusher. I was waiting this thread to evolve in to a knitting and weaving discussion. You know, I can find raw material also (lots of grooming potential), I just don't know how to make those fine sock's, hat's and other clothing.

I literally just ran in the morning and then did the beep test in the parking lot by my house at night. Not brain surgery

Thanks for a good thread, when i read about it i discovered it's exactly what i've been doing for the last 3 months, lots of running and powerlifting, cycling, now skiing and so on to be so overall good one can be, been reading a lot about the legion seems like a very interesting way of life, but im gonna try my luck with the finnish coastal guard and see where that takes me first, just about 2-3 months to go before i know if i'll even get to do their tests :p

This bloke takes Sydney siders through a REP version of Crossfit modified for civvies. The best PTI's I seen were in the Legion. Not because they looked the part of knew their shit more than anyother army but because they did all the exercises with you and set the pace instead of standing around yelling and telling you to "work harder" and "change". Slackers were rewarded by being made to stand at "garde a vue" as their mates pushed out another 50 pushups or ran up another hill. Quickly made you realise that giving less than 110% in PT was not an option.
The thing is these PTI's were'nt even for the most part assigned PTI's who had done the specialised training they were very fit and keen NCO's who knew the exercises and could motivate.
