Hello all,

First time posting here and i got a question that i would like for the Anciens to sort out for me. I have always wanted to join the Legion but I have a wife who I adore and loves me. Our partnership has been solid for the last 9 years. I always told myself that if ever I lose her, then I would have no other reason not to join the Legion (that is of course if they take me, but that is another story).

I am aware that you can only join as a single person owing to the nature of the job. My wife and I are supportive of each others dreams and this is mine. I would like to join but do not want to wait for a divorce as I am still crazy about my wife after all these years. I understand that some of the guys have lied about their status as single when in fact they are not (of course the Legion would know this anyway but I suspect turns a blind eye to it). Anyway to cut through the fat, I would like to join now and my wife would be supportive of me (I know this to be a fact). Any one of you in the same boat?

I'm not in the exact boat as yours, but similar. I'm married but separated for 3 years now. I'm friend with my ex, but haven't lived together for 3 years. Legally, i am still married. I will tell the Legion the truth. I asked a similar question earlier, and i was told by an Ancien that the Legion would take me (provided I fullfil all other requirements) but I would have to change my name in the Legion and do not communicate with my wife.

Another thing, Eagle Eye was right. If you have a healthy relationship with someone you love, then it's going to be hell on you. Imagine all the things that that would be going thru your mind. You would miss her, you might go crazy thinking of she's being unfaithful to you, she will go crazy worrying about you. Eventualy you will loose her, but in the meantime you will suffer needlessly. If you do decide to go for it, i would advice to break off the relationship, and move on, starting from scratch in the Legion. You can't carry any attachment with you.

Amen to that BMILOS I have seen a few suicides because of the separation from wife and family. I was lucky, I had just my two girlfriends attached to me

No way dude.
According to the guys here, I won't even be allowed to forfeit time from leave to go see a dying family member. This will be a HUGE challenge at best. I read about it in the book "Life in the French Foreign Legion" that one guy did manage it but it was very, very difficult. Also, from what I've read, you will be treated like a single regardless.

Like what eagle eye here suggested, looks like I will be better off remaining in this forums for five years rather than the legion! :D

I am no stranger to separation (a year at best) and served in the army for 6 years now, but yes, I will take that on board that the legion is a single man's world, and I guess I can't have my cake and eat it too.

My wife is an accountant so she is self-supporting and independent of me or my income. The grass is always greener on the other side I suppose, and If all else comes apart, there is the legion to turn to as a last resort :(

Thanks for the advise, much appreciated. Good luck to those who are going to attempt selection.

I don't see the problem if you are secure with your relationship. As long as your wife understands befor you go what to exspect.
Shoot in the US Army my buddies are heading back over to Iraq for 18 monts we just got back from 9 monts. I think most armies in todays world will be deployed for long pieriods of time.
I am in the same boat, I have two children and have been with my wife for 10 years. I got out of the US Army 5 monts ago and have been looking for work in PMC'S. I have always wated to join the FFL and find I am at a piont where I need the adventure as well as the job.
After all its only five years, and the training sounds like its werth it.

I aint gettin this............ if you love her, show her, find a dream she can dream with you! How about you close yer eyes and think of the day she gets a letter saying you are dead heres some medals and a thank you note from his boss???????????? Think about her alone without you for five years, think about her hitting hard times in that five years and being stuck at home fighting alone whilst you are off on some voyage of self discovery?????

Exactly how much do you love her dude? Do you want to see her go through hell? It can happen when the Legion is involved dude...!

Stay home man, have kids, love your woman and leave the foolish and the lonely to do the fighting. I been there, you are missing jack shit dude, I promise you, jack shit.

Beau-Sheep Makes a good piont as well. I agree but it can go ether way. In my case I don't no anything ells besides soldiering and I have a family to help support. I can live off of nothing but my kids will never no how that is.
Almost all armies there is a chance of her getting the letter. S@#t I got stabed last year doing security for a frat party for 6 dollars an hour after spending all day in the army. Now diein that way don't make sence lol
If you need the adventure check out a PMC, some of the ones I am trying to get on at are paying 7 grand US dollars a month. I am only saying its an opption. For me the Legion is an opption if I don't have a job within the next week I'll be on a plane middle of November.
I think this is a grate site and I am glad I found it. It'll give you some insight befor you hit the gate.

Afore you go join the FFL, Kruel, my little eye spied in my travels in former Bosnia, near Zvornik on the Drina, a house which I was certifiably told was the US army's 'crumpet shop' for its servicemen. Has the US Army adopted this measure in Iraq ? What is the deal and the going rate ? Eight or more months separation can lead to blindness or "degrading or erratic eyesight" from river-blindness in the desert (..) or whatever...
Stay home man, have kids, love your woman and leave the foolish and the lonely to do the fighting. Legionnaires can be broken men by the separation and die broken and broke drunkards by the end if you don't know how to go about it.
The grass is always greener on the other side I suppose, Marco, you're a very wise man. Chapeau, mon vieux, unlike some here...Stay on the forum as an 'intelligent contributor' for at least five years - or become a 'lifer' if you wish. Give anecdotes - or vernacular accounts, that's 'reality checks' with gentle or bitter irony to suit your taste - in your own thread from your own army without too many 'reverse gear' jokes, we know them all pretty much, if you're Italian but you can cite a 'hypothetical army'... :D

I don't know what it is fellas, just feeling like I am missing out by not following my childhood dream of being a legionnaire. But the reality is also that I have been lucky enough to meet a good woman, a good life with great prospects and this comment by beau sure gave me a bit of a boot in the ass:

"Stay home man, have kids, love your woman and leave the foolish and the lonely to do the fighting. I been there, you are missing jack shit dude, I promise you, jack shit."

At 34, I'm slightly older (and one would assume wiser) to follow my boyhood dream of being a legionnaire. I will leave that to the "foolish and the lonely" as beau would have it. If our lives do cross, I take my hat off to you legionnaire! Merci!

I am no stranger to separation (a year at best) and served in the army for 6 years now, .What army are you in? Why don't you just join a special unit in your army if you want some adventure etc...? It's either the Legion or your wife, simple! You work out what's more important to you. I am not nor was never in the Legion, but i know for a fact if you join, your marriage is over, maybe not immediatly but soon enough.
Your professions of love mystify me alongside your desire to leave your beloved wife for 5 years! Get your priorities straight my friend!

As Beau said you wont miss alot and imigaine geting some medals and a telegram telling her your now sat in Vallaha after dieing for some bobo in a dark distant land.

Bonjour Sgt Smerk,

Re: Your post # 15

One non-Legion rule about separation with children is to provide for the financial support of the children.

Typically, this is done by periodic payments to the parent with custody of the children.

Marie Antoinette probably got misquoted but if you want to have bread, well, ....... cake is tastier. If you want to have both, the kids will suffer. People pay extra taxes because some kids are not provided for.

Saluations,
BobW
