Is that possible what he says in the article, or is he a deserter?

In the British Army he was in the SAS: https://jpjordan.co.uk/ where it says: John-Paul Jordan is a former Legionnaire with the French Foreign Legion after which he joined the British armed forces and successfully becoming a member of the SAS, serving in operations in Afghanistan and awarded for his actions in combat.
Hi Peter, no question about it, he's a deserter. Even by today's standards, you do not just walk out the door leaving the paper work until later.

Yeap "In the end I just walked out and I left sorting out the paper work until later," its nice way to say "I deserted".

He also wrote a book "How to Stop Taking Drugs in 30 Days"

A mean with 39y he managed to serve Legion, join British army, goes up to the SAS, do several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, leave the army, work as mercenary all over North Africa, manage to do some voluntary work to, go back home, get addicted to drugs and alcohol, get off the drugs and wrote book about it! C'mon really? Either is he fraud or his parents sent him here from Krypton when he was a baby.
