The picture reminds me of a famous episode of the Legion "myth" which happened in Morocco in the 20s, when the Legion had to dig a tunnel at a place called Foum Zabel.
The legionnaires of 3REI, at the end, put a post on the mountain saying :
« La montagne barrait la route. Ordre fut donné à la Légion de passer quand même. La Légion l'exécuta » (the mountain was blocking the road. Order was given to the Legion to go through anyway. The Legion executed it).
