No, the Taliban and Al qaeda haven't got the clout. What I do believe is that, unless they are stopped in their progression, then they will take over some of their less 'resiliant' neighbours, with the exception of Pakistan, for the simple reason that they have nuclear missiles.
That which I think is the biggest problem in the short term, 6 months to a year, is the dormant cells which the US, France, Britain and any other do gooders who have taken out the families of those who worked with them during their stay in Afghanistan.
France pulled out about 7 years ago. Then at the last hour, they decide to get out as many of their ex-workers and their families as quickly as possible. 7 weeks is a long time in a poor country, you can very quickly change allegiance in order to keep yourself alive. I can only imagine what changes have happened in 7 years.
It is well known that the terrorists have long memories. Not all of the evacuees' families made it out. All the bad guys have to do is contact the head of the cell in their 'adopted' countries and tell then to put pressure on the weakest.
These people may have come from a real 'sh$t hole' of a town and are now living the life of Riley, but they will not be happy with their sort. They will want more and only Allah can give them so many virgins, so they might as well blow themselves up.
