Deserters during the Indochina War

Look at French figure for deaths at Dien Bien Phu... mainly Legion.

Ask another question, how many deaths did the Legion PRODUCE compared to the rest of the French army.

I think these figures of yours are right, but I also know why! Who did the MEAT of the work in this conflict? Who got all the shit postings? The Legion!

They never deserted, they just refused to die for France anymore!

Just for the interest - I think the ratio of total number of the soldiers deployed to those killed maybe give a better picture of real burden of the particular group during the conflict.

I believe the ratio of Legionnaires to the number of other French service men was one in ten. approximately the same as in Algeria. Legion about 30.000+ total French troop 450.000

Here are some numbers from Anthony Clayton's The Wars of French Decolonization, by summer 1953.

Metropolitan Frenchmen: ground forces 54800

Metropolitan Frenchmen: naval and air forces 25000 (approx.)

Legion Etrangere: 19000

North Africans: 29500

Black Africans: 18000

Indochinese: 53100

Vietnam Army:151000

Cambodian forces: 13000

Laos forces: 13000
