Ok, so here goes...

I'd like to join the Legion to start a new life as I am bankrupt etc. etc.

Having said that about 5 years ago I found some child porn whilst surfing the net looking for adult porn - I reported it to the police but was subsequently CAUTIONED which is the most minor charge they can give you, but with all charges involving child porn you are automatically placed on the sex offenders register and in my case this was for 2 years. A caution in England is called a misdemeanour in America, but I'm not sure what it's called in France.

What I want to know is whether or not this will automatically bar me form service in the Legion. I can probably get more information from my local police about the exact nature of what happened i.e. that it was me who reported the crime to them and the number of files that I discovered - really the thing that got me in trouble was trying to investigate further which made it look worse.

Take it from me I have no sexual feelings towards kids or things like that, the reason I want to join the Legion is to get a new passport and credit rating in France and start a new life far from the past which has been tainted and soured by this event and a few others such as being convicted of carrying a knife whilst I was serving in the Royal Navy some years back.

I hope you can help,
Jonny777.

I don't know what the best thing to do is, but first and foremost I would ask for a statement from the police that it was you who did report the child porn URL. The knife issue is just a minor one.

Get your police certificate, go to the Legion and tell them before they find out by themselves : in the latter case it always looks fishy, not if you tell them the truth from the start !

And don't forget : they will find out !

So, don't waste more time, you are already 33 and have a good (?) military background, but in the Navy. So GO ! GO ! GO !

Thanks for the advice guys - My service record int he Navy was "Very Good (VG)" but I did have some medical issues at the time, as well as a few minor incidents with the police such as carrying an offensive weapon and drunk and disorderly - that was years ago now though. Don't get me wrong I rather work in IT again as I did once I left the Navy, but I am left with no real choice as I am not actually qualified to work in IT and would need about £10,000 to become suitably qualified. The Legion will give me a completely fresh start which is sadly what I need. Here I am sitting about rotting (better than rotting in a low paid job somewhere) but any form of rotting is probably not good. With all this shit happening around the world I am a bit nervous to join for a new life in the knowledge that I might come back with any life at all, but this is the choice I am forced to make. Wish me luck! (I'm spending a year getting fit and learning French first) then.......

Holy f*ck, I knew an older guy who was living in the same hostel as me last year, he got a virus on his laptop and some hackers took a picture of him via his webcam and tried to bribe him into giving them money, or they were going to to send his picture to the police and say he was looking up child porn!

Mate, I've looked up my fair share of Porn in my time but I've never stumbled accross any Child Porn! Sounds awful. Hope you get it sorted out!
