Has anyone seen a film called Beau Travail? It's a French-made film about the Legion set in North Africa during the present day.

Yes, it was a pretty good film. A little on the artsy side but enjoyable. I found it at a place called VisArt Video that has an extensive foreign film collection. Visarts are usually found around college's. There may be one up your way around Clempson. Theres one set in Algeria called The Lost Command. I havent seen it yet.

The movie takes place in Djibouti, not in North Africa. I quite liked it, but it's not really a 'Legion movie' (so don't expect any gung-ho kind of scenes). It's more of a 'psychologic' type of movie, the Legion having been chosen by the director because she wanted to have a 'men-only' context. It's based on a novel by Hermann Melville (not sure) that takes place on a ship (again with men only). Since we can hardly see any woman in the film (except the Djibouti whores), many insinuated that this was some kind of undercover homosexual propaganda. The most ancients members of the board will certainly remember the big 'discussions' raised at that time about a topic that periodically resurfaces : "Legion and homosexuality"...
