No doubt the chain of command was superb. By the mid 1960s all RMs' had to become commando trained. The only exceptions were those who specialised in small boat handling or those who served on battleships. In 1956 HMS Vanguard had 450 RM on board.

There are no battalions and only one Commando Brigade known as 3Cdo Bde RM. Component parts are the various individual commando units and then the internal SF units.

Apologies for non FFL subject.

Being a graduate is a useful asset. Nevertheless it certainly does not make you a good soldier. There are many more important factors to take into account.

I have met some superb men with lesser education who are infinitely just as good and if not better than their graduate colleagues.

On an aside in my day less than 3.9% of the populace attended varsity. I did not and it has never bothered me. My 2 commissions and my First from the HK Government Language School more than make up for not attending university. However at my age it remains an irrelevance.🤣

An after thought I regard being trained by former WW2 Commandos to have been extremely educational. Likewise marching to Sarie Marais.;)
You really are a silent warrior Chas!
Always the quite humble men and not the big mouths who saw real Action.💋

I am a short-arse and vertically challenged.;) 5' 7" just on a good day !

An inspecting officer asked me ; What is it like being a Jack Russell among all these Rottweilers ?
He then said at least I did not look like one. Cheeky so and so and a Pongo to boot.

If you can't take a joke, you should never have joined as my inimitable Sgt said to me.
