    Hello from the USA

So,I am finishing up my college degree, in liberal arts from the university of Michigan. Looking for adventure and something new I am considering either The Legion or Officer candidate school in the US Army special forces (green berets), I really am struggling to chose one. i graduate in 1 year if I decide to join the legion I would like to eventually become a commissioned officer if possible(how difficult is that?) also how does civil life workout in France, with getting a job. If I do decide to go to the Legion will my degree be considering a plus and can it be used when i go civil with my new identity.

    Merci

    Re: Hello from the USA

use the search function to find the answers,
For a legionnaire there are 3 ways to become an officer.

1 If you are sergeant and under 28 years old, having a university degree. You can pass the selection test for the officers course in the french army. You will be competing with the young Frenchmen who just came out of the university (very hard).

2 If you are staff sergeant under 35 years old and have a platoon commander certificate you can compete in tests for the french army. If you pass you will do only one year in the branch officers school. (infantry or cavalry).

3 If you are Sergeant major and under 40 the general of the legion can commission you to officer rank (very rare)

But for many reasons it is very seldom that a Legion NCO will have interests in becoming an officer. And most important your regimental commander has to propose it to you it is not your choice.

Mar Habba. Is this our first Lebanese or a Lebanese Yank? Just what I always looked for in a Pl Comdr, a degree in Liberal Arts. What the feck are Liberal Arts and what have they got to do with soldiering? Then again, Officering isn't soldiering, so you might fit in quite well in the Mess.

Usually means majoring in some subject that is completely useless in the non-academic world. Could be ANYTHING... Could be a study of Mongolian art and culture, or Greek and Babylonian Mythos as it relates to modern western religions, or prehistoric anthropology and/or archaeology, or, or, or...... However, the US will make you an officer for ANY completed undergrad or higher degree, so..

    Re: Hello from the USA

actually in political science and military history, the reason I am considering the legion is because I want to fully move to france. The american political atmosphere and society annoys the shit out of me. I am looking for a fresh start, would I be able to use my degree after the legion. (considering the name change)

    Re: Hello from the USA

As has been stated many times here (and is stated on the official FFL website), your name change is ONLY for your time in the Legion. Those who live out the rest of their days under the new identity are those who never leave the "walls" of the Legion (and incidently do not pass the rank of Caporal Chef, one of the requirements of the rank of Sargent is "normalization of identity" which is also the rank at which you are permitted to marry, get a car, etc, etc)

    Re: Hello from the USA

What if i want to keep my new identity and become a French citizen is that not a possibility, also after the Legion is it hard to work with the French government let us say as a diplomat, or further my education at a French university science po for civil servants. If I decide to go the Legion, France will be my new home.

    Re: Hello from the USA

You cannot keep it, from what I have read. I believe it is a tool for the Legion to keep trained individuals who may have something from their past crop up. If you are looking for information on a career path as a diplomat, I would suggest lurking a bit on Small Wars Journal, and I THINK Auburn university has some mil/polisci think-tank type forums, with your background you should be able to speak the lingo. I wonder about the French university civil servant route. Perhaps some French members can give you better info on that.

No you cannot under any circumstances keep your Legion identity after leaving the Legion. I understand that it is difficult to accept, but the normal recruiting process for French diplomats has nothing to do with the French Foreign Legion.
