Where did you read about that? Because I have never seen it mentioned in books about the Legion and I thought it was the French Navy who took care of the rivers.

It's mentioned briefly in both Windrow's and Fall's books I believe.

    Hi

I read in a new book named "Spaniards into the FFL", which tell the Legion's history from the beginning, especially mentioning the Spanish contribution. It says that these legionnaires among with navy sailors and a few coolies embarked in this cannon boat. I will re-check the source and coming back. Anyway the book was written with the support of the Legion museum I think.

If it is this book you are referring to, I understand why a 5 REI riverine unit is new to me, because I don't read Spanish and today is the first time I see this book. Gracias Google. But it is good to see someone wrote a book about Spaniards in the Legion, because they have been playing an important role in the history of the Legion. 13th DBLE's role during WW 2, way to go.

Exactly Peter, this is the book that I bought the last week, it's a brand new one. The book is really interesting because it tells the Legion's history with special mention about the Spanish contributions, mainly during WWII, Indochina and Algeria. The writer had the support of Mr Emilio Condado Madera ancien adjudant and ancien conservateur of the Legion's museum.
About the topic I made a mistake since the legionnaires who embarked in the boat were from 5 squadron/1 REC under command of Lt Olié, Sergent Nicod and 10 legionnaires, plus 11 coolies. This happens during summer of 1947. Sadly I cannot scan the whole book ! Anyway it's in Spanish...!

Ahhhhh... The 1REC (as usual ). The REC was mostly an amphibious regiment in the Indochina war using Crab and Alligator amphibious.

Do they still have the Crab on display in the REC? It used to be in the corner by the parcours de combattant. Did the REP use the Crabs? The B/C Palin was in the 1er REP and told me that he used the Crab in Indochine. I thought he meant the one on display and he said no, one just like it. He liked that crab and would get misty eyed around it. Whatever became of it?

Sorry. I was flying a model plane the other day and it was a model of a free French Spitfire and the cross was painted on it. Rather liked it. And I'm lame with nothing better as a profile pic hahaha

I don’t know, but if you look at Google Earth, you will see that the whole “parcours du combattant” and the soccer field are gone. They have made some new buildings there for the new ECS (it became two different squadrons). They also used to have a whole row of old vehicles (Half track, AM8, EBR, AML, etc…) parked behind the garage of the 3rd Squadron along the road to 2B and the “stand de tir reduit”. Anyway and as far as I can see they are not there anymore. Maybe they have put them under cover somewhere.

Just found a very interesting site about a lieutenant from 1REC in the Indochina war. Sorry it is in French.
