Lazy eye (amblyopia)

I would like to ask i lazy eye discualifies you form getting in the FFL? My vision in the lazy eye is 20/300 and it is not correctable with glasses. Can you cheat at the eyesight test? Do they cover your eye with something or do they let you put your hand on the eye?
What kind of tests do they do? Do they have a lot of equipment? I am asking those of you who have been there and seen the room at Aubagne in wich the tests are done.

US President Harry S. Truman failed the eyesight test the first time round when all that he wanted was to serve his country in an honourable manner, as an honest, God-fearing citizen and cabinet maker with genuine sincerity and credibility starting out in life. Girls loved the uniform as well at his young age...

When the Europeans stirred the guano leading to WW1, he volunteered and learnt his lesson form his inital experience: he memorised the eyesight board, that's, left-to-right, right-to-left, down-up, up-down, from the inside-out to outside-in. So you can draw your own conclusions. He was a decorated veteran and went on to the highest public office including dropping two atomic bombs. Blame him for one A-bomb if you must but the Japs had a choice second time round...

His service record - including bad eyesight- was a serious character and professional reference and held good to the end of his career. The most respected US president except for two bombs by some accounts...

So, all you have to ferking do is memorise the 'eyesight table'. Surely that's not that difficult...Check Voltigeur's website: it's frigging there..

If the lazy eye is visable. As in it constantly drifts or just plain old "looks funny" forget it.

We had a Nepal Shirpa that had a visable lazey eye. He was tuffer than nails but also was civil.

I know a guy though that did manage to beat the test. How he did it was pretty symple. When they asked him to cover his good eye he left gaps in his fingers big enuf so he could use his good eye to read the chart. It worked for him mainly cuz (no insult here) the Legion medical staff does this day in day out, and get pretty board of the task. Thus they get lazzy. Hell I know a guy (hopfully) still there that pased all his medicals and Gestapo interviews...wearing contact lenzes!!!! No one noticed that he was wearing them at all! And how he managed to get his cleaning solution in is a secret I an he will take to our graves!

The wannabes or whatever should stop shitting in your tutsies and take their finger from the wrong place instead of using this as a ferking excuse to eventually whimp out but to stay on the board as "honorary anciens". I'm not FFL or an ancien but I do know a little about eye disorders so I thought I would contribute my two cents.

First off, here are the guidelines I received from the FFL:

Minimum visual acuity:
* uncorrected: minimum 0,5 for each eye
* corrected: or [7/10 and 2/10], or [6/10 and 3/10] or [5/10 and 4/10] (total: 9/10 with the two eyes)
Correction in dioptres :
* near-sighted: -10
* far-sighted: +8

Amblyopia (lazy eye) is not the same thing as wandering eye. I don't know much about wandering eyes except that it's very ackward to have conversations with people who have them. As for amblyopia, I may have some good news depending on how far you've looked into this.

For those who don't know, lazy eye isn't a problem with the eye, it's a problem with the brain. Between the ages of 0-6, the brain has to figure out how to use the eyes to achieve binocular vision. If for whatever reason, the brain can't be bothered, it focuses on using just one eye and the other is, as a result, lazy. The reason you can't see as well through your lazy eye is because your brain is still trying to use the other one, even when it's covered. So that's the bad news (i.e., that there's no surgery that can address the problem).

Here's the good news: Often the reason the brain gave up on one eye is because that eye happens to be too far or near-sighted for the brain to bother with it. This problem IS correctable. Nothing will get the lazy eye up to 20/20, but correcting the underlying disorder can result in a big improvement. You'll probably still need glasses, but they won't be nearly as thick.

Here's some more good news re taking eye exams: You can generate a momentary increase in the visual accuity in your lazy eye by forcing yourself to use it. Try this: Force yourself to read a page of text with just your lazy eye. For the next several minutes, you will find that your brain gets the message and pays more attention to it.

actually, the eyesight chart is not on my web site, just the allowable impairment chart mentioned in the previous post and FAQ's

Sorry to disturb,

I know there has been afew excellent suggestions to overcoming the poor eyesight problem so far, and I will no doubt use one of them. But what of laser-eye treatment? By the sounds of it the FFL does not employ extreme high-tech eye equipment, so will they be able to detect the process of laser eye treatment in wannabes?
