    Re: Beau Travail

Halfway through part 6 there is a scene where Legionnaires are crossing a river armed with M16s. What's up with that? They had FAMAS earlier in the film. Thought that was odd.

Shit film about homosexual tarts… bent bastards wanking over sweating bodies.
From a military perspective it is completely useless.

Yep, pretty overtly homoerotic. I'm surprised that it didn't meet with more criticism, especially considering that it's the only modern film about the Legion.

    Re: Beau Travail

I dunno I enjoyed the movie as more of a character study, artsy film. It was cool just to see the scenery in Djibouti. It is really a retelling of Billy Budd by Herman Melville (that takes place on an old sailing/whaling ship from what I remember) and less of a story about the Legion per se.
SO the setting in an isolated military posting worked for that telling.

I didn't find it gay at all, but then I don't get excited when I see half naked men. Everyone reads different things into stuff.

Whatever, enjoy the movie for what it is. A retelling of a literary novel in a new setting.
Melville was the guy who wrote "Moby Dick" for those who didn't know.

Nick, are you implying that we get excited seeing half naked men?

Wasn't like the whole movie was overtly "gay" or trying to portray the Legion as an isolated bunch of homosexuals living out in the desert, but there were more than a couple scenes that were pretty out there and had some homosexual undertones.

It wasn't a horrible movie, I just think it's a bit disappointing that this has been the only film set in the Legion made since the 60's.

Agree, but the movie director (a lady name Claire Denis) had not intention whatsoever of making a documentary about the Legion. Actually it's based on a novel by Herman Melville (the author of Moby Dick) that takes place, if I'm not mistaken on a ship at sea.

Well... Everybody can see in this movie what they want to see. If you see it as some sort of "pro-homo" propaganda, so be it...

Anyway this movie is now almost 10 years old... No use to dwell too much on it.

    Re: Beau Travail

BTW are there any modern action FFL or French military movies in the vein of Battle for Haditha, Black Hawk Down, not necessairly based on facts but happening in the more or less contemporary period, involving military combat.

French make good tour de force movies (usually spy or police not military) yet all their other cinematography is some heavy dope drama movies. I would gladly see something else. Was there a movie about Kolwezi?
