    Pay and taxes?

I found how much the pay is but how do you get paid by direct deposit or by some other means? I know I would have to pay taxes for the wages to the US. Does France also tax you?

The pay is after tax. Pease confirm anyone. You're paid by your captain in person every month and as regular as clockwork (unless someone steals the regimental pay: that happened once in my time). The account is held by La Poste (post office) and you have an ATM card to draw your cash at will.

Does the FFL have a reputation for "loosing money" ?

Read my preceding post. It has more reputation for 'loose women' than 'losing money'...

    Bonjour Chris,

The general rule is that Americans overseas must file the annual income tax return but there are threshold levels involved. Taxes are only due on amounts over the threshold.

If you're an American, check with the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) Office of International Operations. Believe they're located in Philadelphia.

This BIG HEADACHE is why so many of us give support to Dubya regardless of his neocon staff. A front burner item is to close down this nonsense system and modernize.

    Saluations,
    BobW

Or maybe legionnaires lose money on loose women.

Certainly lose money on loose women...
A bit like those who spend money on fast cars also spend it on fast other things...

Okay Chris Lee, now for the truth of the matter! First off you're payed via direct deposit into an account set-up for you by the Legion with La Poste. You will be given your ATM type card after completion of Castel you may see it once or twice during training so you can withdraw some funds for basic needs or even Christmas. Second yes you pay taxes to the French but it's really not all that much, and don't worry about paying taxes to the US because you will be under a different name and identity, meaning the US has no way to verify your income in the Legion and the IRS doesnt even care about that money (since you will have a French SSN and not a US SSN). And right now (subject to change whenever they want) everyone who goes in has their identity changed like it or not!

A long time ago (when i was in) you got payed in Francs (cash) every month. This led to many problems and a lot of corruption inside the Legion, although a lot of corruption still exists today the French Army has done all it can to cut the problems in half for you new legionnaires.

    Bonjour Cal J,

Still, there might be a filing obligation IF there are plans after 5 years to reenter the US economy, especially if oriented to the security and related fields. The implications can be nil but then again, minor matters can mushroom.

Your experience is in a different time period. The current era is much more sensitive to leaving the States on a US passport, being absent for 5 years, etc.

I don't want to make this bumb on the topo map into a mountain but I'd surely advise Chris to check with someone who works this stuff daily otherwise in year 6, problems can pop up like the stories we read here about the wannabes and the juvenile justice system from their life eons prior.

    Saluations,
    BobW

Does the pay rate change with the number of years you serve or does it stay a flat rate? In the US Army a SGT with 8 years makes more than a SGT with 5 years. Is it the same in the Legion?
