They don't really care if you speak the language or not. They'll teach you in their own way. But it's better for you if you could understand what others are babbling around you - you could pick up some valuable details at the time.
If you can bang in a pin with your ice axe without anyone yelling at you, and you packed the whiskey 'cause it's the only thing that won't freeze, you're probably alpine climbing.

Go pick grapes and hang out with French speakers, listen and learn and have a great time doing it.

    Re: Language

    RUSTY,

I may have a better response for you than most. here it is..."EITHER YOU SPEAK FRENCH OR YOU DONT". The Legion is not going to care if you speak a little or can understand a bit. Its all or nothing and thats what is put into your Dossier when arrive.

However, yes learning a little will help YOU better understand what the hell is going on, but nothing more. You will NOT get special consideration if you speak a little French. If you mastered the Language, well than thats different, of course you will get special consideration.

I didnt learn any before I went and I did fine, most thought after 6months that I was really french and not American.

    Cheers,
