    SS Members hunt.

Poland has asked Germany's war crimes prosecution office to find former members of The Dirlewanger Brigade, the most infamous of all SS units during WW2. The commanding officer was a child abuser and rapist and most of the unit comprised of criminals and former convicts. This unit is regarded as having been responsible for more atrocities than any other during the war.
If any members are still alive I hope they are in fear, trembling and bluntly shitting bricks.

Such is the way of the world, many ex-legionnaires will have come across Nazi war criminals during their time served.

    Aurelie3,
You are 100% correct about German soldiers in the Legion after WW2. several were still serving in 1956 at Suez in the capacity of senior NCOs.
Unfortunately today a Swedish Neo-Nazi band is named Dirlewanger and the crossed grenades patch of the 36th Division has become the hate symbol of skinheads.

    Re: SS Members hunt.

Dr Dirlewanger was indeed probably one of the worst war criminals in WW2. That many Germans joined the Legion after WW2 is common knowledge. That some were truly convinced Nazis is well known too.
Over the course of its history, the Legion has taken in its ranks people from all walks of life who were looking for a refuge and a new start : "White" Russians fleeing the Bolshevik revolution in the 20s, Jews fleeing the Nazi regime in the early 30s, Republican Spaniards after their defeat in the Spanish Civil War in the late 30s, Hungarians after the 1956 Soviet invasion, etc. etc.
Singling out German volunteers is inappropriate and irrelevant. Once someone has joined the Legion, he leaves his past behind and starts over. There are no more Russians, Germans, Spaniards, etc. There are only legionnaires, serving with Honneur et Fidélité under the képi blanc and the 7 flame grenades. Many died side by side, regardless of their origin, political convictions, religion, race or creed. At Dien Bien Phu, Republican Spaniards (many were present in the 2 battalions of 13°DBLE fought alongside Germans who had participated in the opposite side in the Spanish civil war with the Legion Condor). This is what makes the Legion unique. Like it or not, but politically correct bullsh... has not place in it.

What utter hypocrisy! The capture of Karadzic is to be celebrated but we ought to leave this man alone? A war criminal is a war criminal and a monster and I can never justify that - no matter whom he shared a Kronenburg with.

Which man ? Dirlewanger ? He was captured by the French occupation forces in Germany and died in June 1945.
There's a legal difference to be made between "war crime" and "crime against humanity". In the first case, there's (I think) a 20 year statute of limitation, while someone charged with the latter can be prosecuted forever.
