New Book: Legion of the lost

Anybody read the book 'Legion of the Lost' by Jaime Salazar? An account of an American deserter's experience in the Legion today. Has a 'disenchanted' feel to it.

Read a good chunk of it. He was only in one year and during that year a lot of sand accumalated in his vagina and he broke his word and deserted. I wouldn't recommend anyone buying the book because it is a book that bitches about quality of life in the Legion for around 300 pages.

Jaime Salazar was a shit bag who deserted his mates, broke his word and seen a way to make a fast buck. I would not piss on the cunt if he was on fire. Every one has AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER WISHED THEY WERE SOMEWHERE ELSE BUT HONOURED THERE CONTRACT.
No one said the Legion was easy or the doggies bollocks and they did not look for them they came to the Legion with there sob stories of wanting to change their lives all they did was add to their pathetic lifes the stigma of deserter. Any one who went awol and came back or went to sort out shit at home and came back
are still in my eyes a legionnaire but to **** off for a shit thing like that cretin deserves all the shit he gets

I am not a legionnaire, and couldn't join even if I wanted to because of medical problems, but that doesn't stop me having the deepest respect for, and fascination with the Legion. Instead of reading stuff written by someone who, from page 1, has a totally negative view and biased view of the Legion, I recommend reading 'Legionnaire' by Simon Murray. Sure, the book was based on his experiences in the 1960's during the Sidi-bel-Abbes days, but the book reflects the day to day realities of the Legion during a period of great change and political uncertainty, and was written by someone who served his 5 years avec honneur et fidélité.

Re: New Book: Legion of the lost

Ok I have read a couple books on the legion now (a few history's, and the Life in the French Foreign Legion) and I just got Murry's Legionnaire and Legion of the lost today. I decided to read Legion of the lost first since it is more recent and im about 2/3rds of the way through it.

The legion he paints is SOOOO different from the one I had imagined from everyone elses description. Basically it is a bunch of drunk homosexuals.

Then it dawned on me, this dude is a pussy. He bitches about cleaning and how much money he made private life and that with money it takes half the time to do legion tasks..... yada yada yada.

Does the legion bear ANY resemblance to the gulag he describes? And are the Russian enlistees really that dumb? (my two best friends are recent Russian immigrants to the US and they are some of the best people in the world, so his commentary on Russians is a little surprising).
