    Changing Name

If they decide to change your name do you get to choose what you want or do they just give you a random name?

They will give you an other name, from what I have read so far, it usually starts with the same initials. (you better make/ask for one that is easy to hear when pronounced in French)

    Name Change

Usually they change your first and last name but your surname starts with the same letter as before. You have no choice in this. And to get your real name back is loads of hassle... and without your real name you can't leave France on holidays.

That's correct. My real surname starts with M but my real firstname starts with D.

I can't remember a phone book. In the BSLE there was a S/O, who had a list with common names and a great collection of maps from several countries on the wall (for searching a new place of birth etc.). But I had no influence on the new name who was given to me.

Today each candidate gets a new identity all the same whether its personal record is clean or not.

Huh? I left France on both my PLDs???? We even had a coffee with the French customs guys and they told us how they knew they were meant to turn us away but they were kinda "what the ****" about it. We boarded an Air France flight in Charles De Gaulle, eleven loud and hairy arsed REP lads, still in uniform and without a single passport... The only problem we encountered was on the way back into the UK, twats held us for three hours before they allowed us to go to the Floyd concert... hehehe....

When i was there (December 2003), they took the first letter of my last name and gave me a new last name. Then they told me to pick a new first name that is typical of my country and doesn't start with the same letter as my real name.
