what if you have only limited number of access roads to chose from ?
The opponent can almost second guess you by posting civilian teams next to, for example, mules along the several routes. This might be the case in entering an urban area. But I take your point when deploying from within urban areas.

Damn those that think badly of it and the French Foreign Legion.

'Altius tendam' question for Pier Carlo please.

During the run up to WW1 there was a race between various European nations to build 'Dreadnoughts' and this was exacerbated by the Agadir crisis of 1st July 1911 when the German battleship sailed to Agadir. (2nd Morrrocan Crisis.) The Italian navy had the 'deadnoughts' Cavour, Cesare and Leonardo da Vinci. At the same time they had the Corazzate Dante Alighieri and Duilio class Andrea Doria and Duilio under construction.
Am I correct in thinking that 'Altius tendam' was the fleet or an individual ship's motto ?
As you are a former Naval officer and diver I have every confidence that you can give me a lucid answer.

    Rgds-Charles.

Interesting use of language the Yanks use to categorise a whole range of people firing rounds at them in Iraq. And they are appearing to realise the 'enemy' has a higher order of thinking than 90% of their own. Fancy that.

Seems weird to me that this guy chose to stand down his counter sniper team before the exit had taken place, especially after the meeting had been called of without warning, alarm bells going off or is that just me? As for nor being able to deal with RPG assaults, can someone tell me what they were expecting? The referrals to the training video worry me, the terrorist know what is on these tapes and they know we have developed counter measures, is it then not normal for them to adjust and adapt, how come the writer seems suprised at the level of adaptability of his enemy, is it not to be ASSUMED that the enemy is a crafty evil bastard who learns and learns fast, is that not rule number one in the Legion? ASSUME he is SAS trained and treat him with the same respect! Never underestimate your enemy, he may be a booboo but he is carrying an AKMS and wants to meet Allah, this makes him the most dangerous and unpredictable teddy in toyland in my books.

What I read here is that the enemy is being underestimated, bet no-one thought they could pull 9/11 off. Reality check! They did, now that is high tech terrorism, stop treating these people like undereducated idiots!

    Beau smack on.

Keep your snipers as your ears and eyes covering your withrawal since they are FOO trained and experts in the art of concealment. They in turn keep in touch with their mortar team to bring down defensive fire if required giving all the neccessary fire co-ordinates. When they withdraw on order they remain tactical and are covered in turn.

Never underestimate your raggedy arsed opponent. Do not engage any civilian contractor to dig your fire trenches. Construct them yourself. Do not allow civilians near or into any defensive area for frequently they sympathise with enemy insurgents.

Finally be very cautious of anyone including kids offering goodies. However tempting they are best ignored.

Have an RRF on permanent standby.

    Dear Charles:
    Thanks for your comments.
Yes, you are correct. The motto is reported on a gold medal that I have received from a Captain of the "Andrea Doria". I will scan the image and I will try to insert it in a message.

    Sincerely,

    Pier Carlo

A windshield 'exploded' on a vehicle used by someone retired from US Special Forces?! If it wasn't made of that shatterproof stuff, it should have been removed or other transport sought - to include walking.

The info in the link is old now. American law enforcement officers ARE being trained to deal with terrorism assaults. Some are ALREADY trained. The US Coast Guard is a law enforcement agency (can make arrests, seize evidence, etc) and have recently been reassigned to America's new Homeland Security Deaprtment for this very reason. Many state police forces are currently undergoing this training. Also, the big city police departments are training for this.

The US Army is now allowed to be used against domestic terrorists with RPGs, explosives, etc.

America's borders are as porous as the authorities want. The "old" NORAD-North American Air Defense Command is being redesigned into a joint Canadian-US anti-terrorism organization.

Some American contract protective details do use familiar routes. Some do not.

I'm not familiar with the OODA loop but would recommend reading up on the writings of the Aussie's Ted Serong.

    Warm regards,
    BobW
