    US Marines vs Legion

I may be wrong, but I have noticed that a lot of people on this forum keep comparing the US Marines to the Legion. Why even bother comparing these two units when there are so many better units to compare with the Legion. For example, the British Royal Marines or PARAS, the old Canadian Airborne Regiment, the Dutch Para Commandos this list goes on SO my first question is why do people compare the elite Legion to the Marines and my second is why don't people compare the Legion to these other units?

I haven't been in the Legion or paras, Marines etc but from i understand why compare at all? They are different armies both good at their jobs with different roles...

Comparing regiments is a waste of time. Secondly, the Legion, per se, is not elite. It is a standard army.

Here is the Pro's and con's of the two branches from my experience! this is the basics i didnt want to get into the details, you will get the idea.

    Marine Corps
    ----------Pro's-------------
A part of the US military.
A tradition following military.(ie. old school)
    Small military
more physical than other US branches.
    combat possabilities.
    travel
    9-5 style(can also be a Con)

    ----------Con's-------------
    Not small enough.
    A Department of the Navy.
    follows all US DOD regulations.
limited choice where you go or what you do.
    Women allowed.
The combat you see WILL get you killed(by following US ROE).
    Money sucks
    cleaning all day
    limited specops
    9-5 style

    Légion étrangère
    ----------Pro's--------------
Small unit (training is more one on one).
    A tradition following military.
    Very physical.
    Mass combat possibilities.
Learn at least on new language
    Travel
Knowledge of foreign fighting tech. and equipment.
14 juillet in Paris--lots of women!!
    connections to outside PMF's.
    More training possiblilities.
    more specops possibilities.
    No women
    Money is good.
    Don't follow US ROE!

    -----------Con's------------
A branch of the French army
Corvée. corvée. corvée...you get the point.
    Away from home and culture.
    Corruption.
Limited choice where you go and what you do.
5 year rules (ie. no phone, car, wife, house, etc.)
    limited free time.
you are there as cannon fodder for the French!
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
feel free anyone to add to the list and ROE stands for (Rules of engagement) those are the rules every US troop must follow, or CNN will film you and you get kicked out. I learnt a lot more in the Legion than the Marines. I served as a guard in the Corps (8151), I served on the Nimitz. I got out on a contract issue with the Corps. In the Legion i learnt 4 specialties and went through numerous schools, somewhere around 8 or 9, maybe more. I harbor no ill feelings with the Marines, i did learn something. But i would always chose the Legion first (i feel safer in combat with the Legion). Hope this helps.
    i hope it helps.

I'm one of those who have compared the Legion to the U.S. Marines.

I was in the Marine Corps, from 1970-74.

After reading a vast majority of the comments here from current and former Legionnaires, as well as comments from a number of hard copy and other www sources, I made the comparison.

My comparison had nothing to do with tactics or operations, but were an observation that many of the things I've said about my time as a U.S. Marine have been repeated, almost word for word, by many Legionnaires.

It's almost as if we have similar cultures, separated only by language.

I have known many, many U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force types. Their experiences in those services are as different as day is to night from the Marine Corps. Talking to many of them made me think they were the ones serving in a different country.

My complimentary statements were simply a matter of saying the experiences of those in the Legion seems to mirror my experiences in the USMC.

I don't know why anyone doesn't compare Royal Marines, Dutch Commandos, or any other services and units to the Legion. Perhaps the internal cultures of those great units are also as different from the Legion as day is from night?

Apparently, every time we've got a new member on the forum, we're condemned to have a new edition of the famous "let's see who's got the biggest dick" contest... And the more 'senior' members replying it's essentially pointless to compare apples and oranges and the moderators closing the thread.
