    Life after training?

    Hey guys,

Once your in your unit, and have been asigned a roommate do you "on your free time" have the means to watch t.v in your own room and maybe even have a video game machine hooked up? I guess whati am asking is can your room be your home? do you get to bring your own things into the room?

That question is an answer to why people who really want it and are well prepared fail.

Spare time activities in order of preference:

    1. Clean FAMAS
    2. Wash and dry gonk bag.
    3. Wash and dry combats
    4. Iron tenue de garde.
    5. Repack sac-à-dos ready for its next walkies.
    6. Clean locker
    7. Clean a company weapon.
    8. Eat.
    9. Sleep.
    10. Go out and get pissed
    11. Get laid (or buy porn)
    12. Look busy

You rig up a game to a TV and see how long you will be allowed to play it! You will notice at once that sitting back with a smile on your face in this mans army only singles you out as a man with too much time on his hands! You may as well just stand naked on the place d'armes screaming "GIVE ME SOME CORVEE!"

Noted... I just know that in the US army etc.. (not to compare) once your out of training you live in barracks but have a room mate. And you can have your TV sent to you etc.. Sounds like these are not luxury there. It's good to know.

Haha shit man, ****! TV ... Only stuff on TV these days is Reality Bullshit!!!

Funnily enouh though, I was just watching a Video (Downloaded it off the Net) and he had Legionnaires using Laptops, Digital Cameras, Trading Music CD's and Listning to U2 on the Freaking Radio!

This was filmed during the Kosovo conflict, the Video is around somewhere, bound to see it if you look for 2eme *** Titled Videos.

Another thing to note was the Hand-to-Hand Combat, a lot of it was based around the Basic principles of Boxing. They even had a square pit where they showed guys having sparring matches - very Interesting

After Basic training when you get to your regiment it depends how long until you will receive freedom like i call it . Well then you can have what ever you want in your room as long as it's in the locker and not view-able when they inspect the room (so if you have a laptop that's okey or as some did put their computer inside the locker).

    TV yeah.

In 2REG, after 18:00 you're just doing what ever you like to do (that is if you have finished all the training that comes) and well if your in the support company in 2REG it's even better because there you get a room for your self no roomate .

Cleaning the FAMAS and shit like that is done at work time sorry guys, but the Legion you all think of is not all like it used to be just 10 years ago

My question was (which has been answered & thank you!) can you at some point after basic have your personal belongings with you within reason? I was just wondering if I ever tried out and "made it" if I would be able to bring say my PS2 with me to kill down time? Etc... Although it is the FFL regarded as a hard mans army, I would assume life on your time off is yours? I remember when I was being discharge from the Marines this sergeant was in the office playing solcom navy seals on a ps2. I would think although are cultures are different their. We would have some of these freedoms? But what the hell do I know! All I know is you have to keep your sanity some how.

LMAO! i'd love to see the look on the Capitain's face when he walks in on jobipolar duking it out on his ps2.

jobipolar: "Cap!! Sweet. i need a second man, Sir. Grab the other controller and let's do this! .
Actually, forget it. I don't want to be anywhere near that base, when that happens!

****!!! I may seriously think about doing a few years in my home countries Army and then joining a real merc, hell!!!! Who wants to serve with a couple of wombats playing Playstation in their spare time.

Forgive me for saying it, but the Legion is starting to reveal itself as a whimp capital of Armies... All hidden by its History ... Shesh ... Playstation? come on ... Write a letter, playfight with your room-mate, share stories ... am I getting a bit too emotional? eh eh? EMOTIONAL? ... **** me days ... Play Station ...

Is it a little too idealistic? ... am I being a TOO idealistic?
Eagle says to expect nothing, but can't I expect harsh treatment and long periods of boredem?

Is the Advice the Aciens share on this board really worth squat? I mean, you have jokers jump on here saying its changed - acceptable - but are the Aciens just preparing us for one big put down? ... To join and Find out it isn't want we thought it was, a pussy army with stupid luxuries ...

I know its being a little presumptions talking as if I would get in, but to get in it means I want to for reasons being - pain + more pain + pride. Who the hell wants to be in an Army with fat fast food retarded american kiddies playing their games and watching their reality TV shows...

Ah, I'm done with my Bitch and Moan.

I will dwell in silence here forth.

    ----------- Update ------------

    Just for your Information, Lads.

I had a perfectly fine sleep. Nor did I wake up "on the wrong side" of Bed.

kiwi, big words for someone who has never served in an army. who cares what a soldier does in his few moments off, its what he does on duty that counts.
its easy to sit in your warm easy chair and dream of a soldiers life, its a whole other thing to live it.

I kinda like you Kiwi so I will try to be as dipolmatic and subtle as Beau allows...

    Wind ya ****in neck in!!!!!

Most of those anciens who served with the REP or the 3eme REI will tell you sweet fluck all has changed nor will it. The REP remains a regiment of hard assed assholes who you insult to their face or not at all. Your post is outta place. The Legion like other armies has its elite units, you will sweat bllod to get in them. Even today.

The easiest job in the world is critic. How can you if you have not been there? See what I mean with wind ya fluckin neck in? Go! Make it to the REP or 3eme REI, do five, come back and mouth off. It will not happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never slag my regiment off again, yes you did, you said "legion" my regiment is a part of that Legion, join it, cut the ****in mustard, stick it out, then slag em off!

Boredom? Ever been to Chad on a day the BooBoos feel lucky? Boredom my botty!

    Quality Advice; Interpretation

    Bonjour Kiwi,

I've been following the posts with advice. Remember this is in cyberspace.
It is the reader who must interpretate what is read. That means you. You know who was in the Legion and who was in other forces. If you hired a consultant, you would have to do the same thing.

The Sergeant-Major gave professional advice on physical training. So did some others. The Legionaire anciens are giving you clear advice.

One disadvantage you have is not having the reference points from experience in another military to "test" what is being told you.

It's an excellent idea on your part to join a New Zealand military organization (other than military advisor to the Prime Minister; she could be a US politican the following morning !!). If you're interested in the French Foreign Legion AFTER you've completed training and did some unit field work, you can make good decisions. Currently, you're getting overloaded with material - both correct and the nonsense. This happens on active duty also. It's just that the professional soldier (or other) knows how to avoid it.

Boredom is a specialty field in itself. It's prevention is a skill, no less than physical training or communications. It takes training from anciens and experience to overcome boredom. After spending days (plural) at an airport waiting for something to happen, you will understand what I write and the importance of mastering this killer.

Go down to your local, friendly NZ recruiter, get the pamplets AND also sample documents of what they want you to sign, and return here. Report in and ask for the free advice bureau.

Without some military experience you are at a disadvantage in TRYING to join the Legion. With some experience, you will know what the next step is.

    Saluations,
    BobW

Yeah yeah, I'm young and dumb ... I was Given a Mouth, so I use it

Apologies to those who found/find themselves offended

In reply to Bobby Bubba Bob's Post: (Don't want to waste Thread Space)

I am up for selection in May '05, for that Intake I don't have many choices, the most obvious likely one is going to be Gunner

I don't want to be a Educator or Movements "Operator"

Intake information: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Depending, I will spend 1 - 2 Years in my home Army, then try for the Legion.
I reckon it is good advice (think it was Eagle that put me on to it) joining your home Army first. Get a taste for it.

I know what the life is like by ear (stories, friends...etc) but there is only one way to know for sure.

ONE PROBLEM THOUGH: Our Army "now" requires that applicants have "School Qualifications". So their tests are going to be an interesting challenge, especially seen as so I left school when I was Thirteen.
