Oi, dude, tranquil. Where do I say I hate the Legion? Fudge you too weirdo. You don't have to do push up or pull up tests to make rouge. You only have to do one physical test and that is the runing test which is easy. Most didn't make it above level 10 and several were smokers.

I passed all the tests and 4 interviews.

I made level 12 on the beep test. One Colombian made level 14. Most were in an untrained shape and didn't do well. Level 7 is the minimum level you must pass. That means you will run for 7 minutes in this test. You start off very easy, and a caporal will run with you in the beginning to help you get the right pace. You can't misunderstand the test in any way, as you have at this stage passed the psychotechnical tests and have a normal IQ.

You may be tired and probably dehydrated because you have been working for several days in hot temperatures. You do get 10 minutes before the test to take a shit and hydrate. Remember to drink water then. Perhaps more than you think you need.

Most likely your physical preparation is important for yourself later in the Legion, but for the initial selection it seemed less important. So if you are holding back because you want to do 1 year of training and exercise you are better off going sooner than later.

yeah, you're right EV. They must have spoon thiefs in the Legion - either that or someone is digging an escape tunnel and the spoons keep bending

Well I dunno, Kristo called it like he saw it. He wasn't totally off the mark in some ways, it is tons of work. And if you are there during a special occasion you stay longer and work harder. I was there 18 days and got to prep and clean up for Christmas and New Years. It is hard work, lots of bullshit and you get time to think if this is for you. I also heard from LOTS of legionnaires that the Legion was BS, all cleaning and no missions etc.

But I personally still wanted to see for myself. Since there were also legionnaires who clearly enjoyed their work as well. And that is the important thing....The people who enjoyed their work had great attitudes, expected little, if they wanted it, they didn't wait for it or complain, they set a goal and worked for it. The best example was my interviewer in the "Gestapo" the more hardcore motivated and inspirational guy I could find.

Personally, I figured that the ONLY way to know the real Legion, was to see for myself. I also heard from everyone that Aubagne is NOT representative of what life is like in the rest of the regiments, Combat Regiments are apparently different. A lot of the guys I talked to that were down on the Legion admitted it was much better in the combat regiments and missed being in those regiments, but for various reasons were in Aubagne. Not to trash Aubagne, but most guys seemed to want to be elsewhere, though again, some guys seemed happy there and happy with their jobs. Seems to be attitude plays a huge part in it all. Same with the EV"s.

I saw and went through much of the same things that Kristo did, many friends I was with in Aubagne and guys like Bram saw the same stuff, same bs work and bs treatment...yet we were sad to leave, and want to go back if it is possible. I met lots of good people there, both EV's and legionnaires. To me it was the people that made the experience and the Legion worth going to and staying in.

About the Spanish CCH in the kitchen, he is a good guy. Don't disrespect him. He was always good to me and to the guys I worked with, if he gave you shit, it was cause you deserved it. Sure he drank and could get a bit crazy when drunk. such is life. I spent a crazy night drinking with him before I joined so I know he and a few other legionnaires in a different context as well. Good men.

Someone asked about Italians, i was in Aubagne with 4 Italians, all good men, only 2 made it rouge, one who made it was from Sardinia. "P", 36 years old, great little guy, very fit and a good friend.

No matter how hard you try to prepare the Legion will still knock you for a loop. You think you know how it will be, you don't. You won't know till you get there. Expect nothing but hard work, and bullshit, keep your mouth shut, don't fight, don't **** around and find people that can be trusted, make friends, enjoy the little moments of humor and camraderie. Do your best and pray you make it. The Legion chooses you, it is mostly out of your hands, but a good attitude, high level of motivation and the willingness to do what you are told, when you are told, and with enthusiasm will go a long way towards helping you on your way.

But there should be no shame in going to the Legion and then choosing to go home if it isn't for you. I applaud Kristo for at least trying AND for going civil and leaving his spot for someone else who really wanted that lifestyle. Good luck Kristo, thanks for your post.
    Good luck guys.

Ty for another big post Nick

What would be those combat regiments? Don't go all "you want rambo and killing don't go to the legion" stuff on me. Obviously not only most wannabee's prefer some action, but also most Legionaires do! And can you choose or only get chosen to go one? Ty in advance.

    Legion is all about respect

I found there one truth. Legion is all about respect. If you do your job well and don't dissrespect others, other would respect you or at least they would leave you alone. The little Spanish guy from the kitchen was fine. I think I saw a para wings badge on his chest. He was very strict but fair. When we worked hard he thanked us, once in the evening he even let us drink two cups of wine with him because we did our job well.

Smart guys and freaking mongols in Aubagne

...yes, exactly every morning he used to line us and asked: "which of you is inteligent?", - and then gave them very "sophisticated job" -working at the washing machine, yeah funny. And who screwed the mission or stoped the machine and could'n make it run again, he used to call him freaking mongol. Pure mongols, legionaires in Aubagne used to call that way those guys who didn't understand orders or who did something wrong. Based on my knowledge it starts when a few years ago for the very first time a Mongolian join the Legion. He couldn't understand a word, there were no dictionaries, nothing they could use for making him understand. Based on a documentary film he finally passed Castel and hopefully is still in service.
P.S. nothing personal against great Mongolian nation, sorry guys )

I personally loved working the Kitchen since it guaranteed extra food. even with the extra food I lost a lot of weight there. But then maybe that is cause I worked so hard...
I lost count of the number of beers or glasses of wine or champagne I had there, officially and unofficially. Some perks to joining around christmas and new years, they officially gave us beer, wine and champagne but also CCH's will pull you aside for hard work and a good attitude and let you drink, plus when you are cleaning up there are opportunities to "sample" the wines. Heck in Domain Danjou I was packing and helping to ship hundreds of bottles of wine with the Anciens.... Great guys...

I miss the sophisticated jobs like washing pots and dishes... Especially dusting and washing plants, one leaf at a time in La Ciotat...hehehehee sucks at the time but the memories are priceless!
