Arrow The Real Heroes of Telemark: The True Story

    Book Description
Published to tie in with the 3-part BBC TV series, Ray Mears shows how the success of a vital World War II mission depended on survival skills.
    Synopsis
In 1943, four men parachuted onto a Norwegian glacier, equipped with only the most basic equipment. Their mission was to prevent the Nazi regime from building an atomic bomb. Wilderness expert Ray Mears tells the true story of this gruelling campaign, showing how these men's ability to survive in extreme conditions influenced the outcome of World War II. The Telemark campaign was an example of the bravery and skill of the SOE trainees. The Norwegians transformed a military disaster into triumph. This title tells the full story.

I watched the TV series last weekend and let me tell you, these guys are truly real heroes. Humble and modest after accomplishing something that was THE thing that stopped the Nazis from developing their atom bomb.

I'm not sure if the next link will work for downloading the TV series, because I don't have time to try it out. If it works, it's well worth the three hours it takes to watch it after downloading:

If the above link doesn't work, here is a link to some people that took part in filming it, where they have still photos and some more info:

Within each of us is a hidden store of courage, courage to give us the strength to face any challenge. Within each of us is a hidden store of determination. Determination to keep us in the race when all seems lost." Roger Dawson

Let's not forget that Operation Grouse took almost 2 years to accomplish with lots of obstacles to overcome, for example the starvation these men lived through, the discouraging events along the way to mention but a few.

As has been said time and time again, a person's mindset is what determines a mission's success. At any point during those two years these men could have said, I've had it, I can't take it any more. And no one would have treated them in a bad way for it. But they didn't. Because they are not deserters. A human beings true strength is all in the mind. It's not about what someone else will tell you, it's about what YOU believe. That is the difference between a deserter and a true Ancien for example.

Here is a quote I heard at work yesterday:

Excellent book. But, does anyone wonder why Ray Mears looks like he is the olympic champion take away pizza eater after surviving solely on a diet of pig nuts and squirrels on his t.v. show?

LOL @ Ray Mears... Remember - celebrities can afford to live however they want... and it's a lot easier to teach what's right than to live it. On the other hand... his metabolism could be extremely slow... or perhaps he has another physical condition that is not common knowledge... In any case, he's not the interesting person in this program... as far as I am concerned he's just the presenter.

FYI: In this particular TV program Ray Mears does NOT live on the diet that the 4 men who were testing what the Telemark heroes had to live on during Operation Grouse were. He was living on the Norwegian daily rations... so blame the Norwegian army for his healthy red cheeks!

Sssssssssshhhhhh! Stöeng!!! You're giving away the secrets to an un-healthy happy life! Don't tell the wannabes as much... They'll never beast themselves into shape for the Legion if they know this incredibly useful secret!!!

Yeahhh !! Let them continue to exercise themselves to the bone.

I am much more philosophic now that I have reached the canonic age of 40, and especially since I finally !!!! discovered that the most efficient aphrodisiac sexual attraction device for women is called American Express.

Hmmmm... I guess it takes a financially savvy lady to be more attracted to a man's brain rather than his bank account(s) or credit limit...
Sorry, Stöeng et al, American Express doesn't do it for me. Not that you'd ever want to meet me any of you! LOL

    Thumbs up

Finally found a website where the importance of this/these operations are put in question:

Always liked a good argument, so I'm happiest when there are some disagreements with my personal opinions...
