    Gign

There has been a some talk as to what legionnaires do after their contracts expire. What about the GIGN? Is that a realistic career option? Has anyone heard of an ex-legionnaire entering it?
    yeah

I've seen one time a docu on the GIGN recruitment, and if I remember right, one requirement to enter is to have been in the Gendarmerie (a policeman) for at least 5 years. And mind that the GIGN is only like 130 people.

That's surprising but I guess it's true as each candidate will have its life analysed, and it's more difficult if you're born outside France.

You don't have to be born a Frenchman, I worked in Algeria with an English guy who did five years in the Legion, took French nationality and spent seven years in the Gendarmes, two of them with GIGN. (Groupement d'Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale)

yeah that's why I said it's surprising, because in the French system, once you've your French passport, that's the only thing that matters. For us the world is divided in French and non-French, whatever your religion, place of birth, etc.
