    non-French Officers

I've tried tracking down the answer to this, but haven't really found anything:

Is it possible for non-French Legionnaires to become commissioned officers?

    If so, how?

Not that I'm interested - I've already got a nice life in the military. Just curious.

    officers

It is possible, but they would have to become a French citizen first.
See my web site "three ways to become an officer" by a former warrant officer.

Great, that's exactly what I was looking for.

So they don't take any account any prior commissioned service, eh? Of course, I can see why they wouldn't necessarily want someone who had been an officer prior to serving as a Legionnaire.

Not to mention questions wondering why someone would resign their commission to serve in the Legion.

    No, they do not

The Legion does not care whether one has been a general in an other army. Every new E.V. start from the bottom up. However if they feel a guy is qualified, he can rise quickly up in rank.

French or not. In the REP it was next to impossible, there was one case in the entire Regiment. An ADJ Chef I knew even had La Choix de Guerre (rouge) and was never expected to pass the rank he held, poor git was a brilliant section commander and in my opinion would have made an even finer company commander. I have no idea why he never made it, intelligence? Who knows, all I know is that legionnaires very rarely became officers.

I know it to be possible, I think you have to be one hell of a soldier for it to happen

    lieutenant colonel Hans Eberle

Beau is right. There were only few Anciens who made career as an officer in the Légion Étrangère.

One and perhaps the most famous unknown legionnaire for the outside world is lieutenant colonel Hans Eberle. The lieutenant colonel Hans Eberle is also one of the figures of the foreign Legion.

In 1965 18 years old German native Hans Eberle left his home country and engaged into Legion.

Hans Eberle promoted from 2ème classe up to the lieutenant colonel and he also was useful with honour and fidelity during his 37 years of service.

    ---- ---- ----

Hans Eberle once said that 2ème REI’s one of the most beautiful memories remains the Operation Daguet (Desert Storm): “Daguet, it is all the force of the Legion. Comfort point of view of, we did not have anything. Just miserable guitounes and sand and perspiration. However which faith animated us, we wanted at no price to disappoint our chiefs and, in spite of the conditions rather frustrates, always it was good mood...”

“The Legion, what a human richness! Of all the external operations during these twenty last years, 2e REI, within the best units of French army, able to be ready for any deployment in a few hours.”

Les Anciens d'autres régiments pourrait être sont en désaccord la phrase supérieure.

If you have a degree before you join the legion, and serve your 5 years, could you not join the reg French army as an officer and hopefully be transfered to the Legion ?
