    Disobeying Order - Luc Leger

    Hey,
Before I start, I want to say that I know that disobeying orders is the last thing you want to get from soldiers (and I don't want to offense anyone here!), but I was reading a book yesterday and author said that whenever he was joining he was doing a Luc Leger test and he was at lvl 6.9, so the officer told him to stop, but he refused and continued on.
Later on he said that they told him, that he was accepted because he showed his "motivation"...

I don't know what to think of it .... ??

I would like to know what our precious ex-Legionnaires think about that situation

    Thanks

Re: Disobeying Order - Luc Leger

Depends. The Officer may have said to him “arrêtez”, but as an offer rather than an order “you've had enough there? Want to stop?”. It doesn't have to be like the Ranger candidate school where they are screaming at you to “quit”. A casual softly spoken offer to stop that is met with acceptance is often indication enough of a person's motivation. The man in the book may have misconstrued an offer as an order. Then depending on the day could of been an order and the Officer was having a good day. There is no second guessing in the Legion.

No need for jealousy . Currently serving legionnaires can be expensive too. Depending on who's buying...
Life is what you make of it. Always has been, always will be. The challenge in life is to have the right motivation...

We all should keep in mind that a lot can be misconstrued in translations of languages, including the tone of voice being used.
We had quite a few fights during selection in Sidi Bel Abbes because of wrong interpretation of what was being said.

P.S: In those days they let you scrap, unless it got out of hand. Now try to translate this statement and see what comes of it.

I think that if he would have mentioned that he received some sort of correction for his disobedience it would sound more believable to me.

But if he said it like: “tu veux arrêter?”, he might have only heard the arrêter part in a questional tone and assumed it was an option. Who knows?

Simply I suggest a question of intonation to be construed either way.

Well… it is anyway 99.99% chances for that there were no officers present at the test, so much for translation.

There was one at mine. Didn't seem the slightest bit interested in us EVs though, think he didn't have anything better to do with himself lol.

I got told to stop during the beep test, but I knew he meant stop. Been around enough DS to know what an order is, but I got over the pass mark so it was ok.

Re: Disobeying Order - Luc Leger

Here are detailed quotes of my previous posts about what happened to me during two separate tries in the physical test.

October 2011: "On Luc-Léger a Moroccan CCH TOLD ME to stop at palier 7.5. Then I did 10 pull-ups.
    - A Bulgarian did the most with 9.5 paliers but only 8 pull-ups
    - Another Bulgarian did palier 8.5 and maxed out at 11 pull-ups
    - A Serb did palier 9 and 8 pull-ups.
    - A Romanian palier 7 and 7 pull-ups.
My buddy the Serb and the Bulgarian who did 9.5 and 8 pull-ups passed, the rest got inapte temporaire 3 months.

    Febuary 2012:
    - A 30 year-old Algerian stopped at level 4,5 then did 5 pull-ups
    - A 18 year-old Ethiopian kid stopped at level 5.5 !! Did 6 pull-ups.
    - Me and a 28 year-old ex-military French guy were TOLD to stop at level 6.5. We kept on running until level 7, then the Caporal REALLY TOLD US stop… and given the situation we did not want to see him get any angrier… The French guy did 8 pull-ups, I did 10.
    - A 24 year-old Algerian, with dual citizenship (the only francophone besides the French guy and I) stopped at level 8 and did 12 pull-ups.
    - A 23 year-old Moldavian stopped at level 8.5, did 10 pull-ups
    - A 18 year-old Spanish kid and a 28 year-old American with Coke bottle glasses stopped at level 9 did 16 and 9 pull-ups.
    - A 30 year-old ex-military Russian was stopped at level 10, did 12 pull-ups.

The ex-military Russian, Spanish kid, American with Coke bottle glasses, Moldavian, Algerian with dual citizenship, Ethiopian kid passed. All the rest got sent home (yes, yes... the French guy and I got skipped!!)

Sometimes the Caporal will tell you to stop on level 7 of the shuttle run because they know you know that it’s the fail mark and they make you believe you made it (this was done to me on my second try while I was okay to keep running). They are reluctant to take two of similar nationality even if the results are similar
    - In my two tries top dog at sport test was an ex-military (although I heard the story of an ex-Spetznaz who did 34 pull ups and got turned down and was told it was because they would not be able to mold him into what the Legion wanted…)
-They want to make groups of different nationalities, sprinkle a few guys that are more mature, and one francophone, so he can help the others. All this I guess is done to foster cohesion.

No matter what I think of it, the Legion is very set in its ways. They select men based on a myriad of considerations. Some of them make sense, other are arguable, but the legion ultimately aims at making them fit to serve. It is all they do and they are good at it.

But it doesn't mean that the system is absolutely flawless. Of those who make it through selection and basic, some desert, some lose the plot, some go through their contract being miserable... etc. All it comes down to is how dedicated you are. Push yourself as far as you can go in your training don't hold anything back, leave nothing to regret. And if you don't succeed don't beat yourself up.

I don't know if that will fully make sense to those who read this. But I never set out to join in order to prove to myself that I could become a legionnaire. But because to me, the Legion offers just the kind of life I want to have : a strict and regimented life, a physically and mentally challenging existence amongst a large group of like-minded individuals with whom I can share a strong bond.

The psychometric test, the physical test, the ‘gestapo’ interview, basic training, are just stepping stones towards a series of ever increasing great challenges. I don't claim to fully grasp what it means to live a legionnaire's life, but I'll be bringing forth the best within me in order to live it.

I'm still training for my next try, the only way for me to succeed is to be in the top pick.
