Believe? Mate, I lived in Saigon for three years ('68-'71). I remember! (No small feat in itself for a crusty old fart like ol' watashai...)

If you haven't already, you absolutely must read Graham Greene's "The Quiet American." Despite its being fictional, it's the best thing I've read that explains the roots of the American/Vietnamese war. Greene had lived in Saigon as a correspondent for the Times of London for the five years leading up to the Geneva accords of 1955 and did his homework well. It was my hobby to scour Saigon and locate the places described in the book. If you can't find a copy of the book locally, PM me and I'll send you one.
