What was your reason for joining the French Foreign Legion (or wanting to)?

Do i want to go to war? Yes. Does that make me a horrible person? Maybe. I have no interest in serving an organization based on terror. I'm in the US army and I've been pretty successful at it too but I want more excitement then this army offers me, and that is why I have my sights set on the Legion. It's just my inner warrior talking when I say things like that, but don't we all have one inside of us? That's why we do what we do, or plan to, n'est-ce pas? If you don't want to go to war, don't join any army.

Well according to some cunts I just talked to earlier today at a park the FFL sucks and wouldn't beat his weekend paintball team.
Does anyone else find the whole "France sucks and surrenders" scheme old and ignorant? Especially when it comes from someone who has never read a second into the FFL training or history and couldn't even make it in a redneck militia from michigan.
I think maybe I should start calling the navy seals or marines pussies for letting their nation pull them out of Vietnam? No because it's bullshit just like this guys opinion

It's due to America's view of the world wars and France's opposition to Iraq. I remember "Freedom Fries" and "Liberty Toast" when I was in (took France out of the names) but if you look at EU missions. Other nations give 2 officers, France gives the Legion. There you go.
If someone wants to say France is weak and needs to be defended by others fine, who the F' do they think the Legion is? There you go (Legion is the others paid to do their dirty work for them).

Phil died? I remember him. Too bad we lost like 10 years worth of posts on the various incarnations of the board. Lots of good stuff way back in the day.

Hey Johno! Yeah, I came to this site in 1997... didn't go to Aubagne till 2005. I should have gone earlier but put it off due to University and gf/family stuff. I wish I had gone earlier, the only valid reason to put things off was University. When I finally had enough of the BS I sold just about everything I owned, got rid of my car and my apt, put the remaining stuff in storage and took off. There have been periods where I haven't come to the board for a long time, but I always come back. Some of the best people I know I met on this board. Made good friends here and got a lot of help and advice from friends I have made here. Good times...good times.

Yep, I remember all that. They called you the ultimate wannabee! Then you finally went after like 7 years and then washed up in Korea and still there.
God I've drunk so much cheap "goon" (box wine) in those days smoking roll-ups and hung on the forum for hours at a time. Good times indeed.
Remember the Aussie Matt Griggs? He was on the board for a couple of years around 99-2000, went to Aubagne and got rejected because of some childhood surgery. He went into the Royal Marines several months later and graduated from being a crap hat to best all round recruit the King's badge! Just in time to go over to Saudi and Op Telic. 6 years in the Marines and then circuit for a while. Now works over here. Had coffee with him a few weeks ago!

Yes, he was one of the legionnaires lost at sea when crossing from Corsica to mainland France on a sailboat. There is a pic of him and me at Camerone in 2007 on my web site.

Speaking of berets, I tend to have the luck where when I'm really getting serious about something my annoying cousin will try and copy me.
After his daily 8 hours of playing call of duty on xbox he apparently had his mom go on ebay and buy him a beret of the 2nd REP (he is currently obsessed with the FFL because he knows I am going to join and he also knows he is a failure who dropped out of school and wants to be tuff)
Honestly I don't have any place to say to him "you shouldn't wear that!" as I've worn military stuff but whats your opinion on that?
It seems like something someone has to earn to wear right? Or is that more the kepi and the beret is just kinda like how the ACU patrol cap is to a US army soldier.
