Hey man, just run as far as you can as fast as you can.
You can download the beep test to your mp3 (know that links have been posted here before) or read about what times/distance you are suppose to have to be able to pass/excell at the selection.
Just google beep test and it tells you how fast and long the score means. The best way to train running is.. running.

It will certainly do you some good, but there is nothing like running itself. Its one of those things that you have to do until you are good at it, which takes hard work, a few puking sessions, and breathing out of your arse. Its all about getting into a rythm, therefore you need to train your lungs to work effectively at a high intensity. I remember when i first started running, i was as i mentioned above, but after a few bad runs, i had a good one, and that spurred me on. I have been running for over 7 years now, and its only now that i can say i enjoy running. Its hard work, but it pays off, and when you have your breathing in a rythm, you should start to enjoy it more. Either way, enjoy it or not, running is essential in a military life.

So thats just keeping the same, deep breathing going no matter what your speed is?

Try and breed deeper and take longer strides. Its hurts more but after a while you will see better times and longer distances.

Keep pushing yourself Tom, thats how you will get faster/fitter. Try to start off at a steady pace, and see if you can increase the pace as you get into the run more. Running is 90% in the head, thats why it helps to maintain a constant rythm. Try shorter quick runs on some days, and then longer steady ones on others.
A good method to quickly gain some aerobic fitness is interval training, for example whilst running along a road, pick a street lamp and sprint until another one (50m or so),then jog for the same distance, then sprint, jog etc.
This will help with your lung capacity, and ability to handle different intensity changes in your excercise:D

Some days im faster some slower, but i run to that point where i can just maintain my pace and breathing. I run so that if i was to push a bit more, that i would not be able to maintain for long. This ensures that my lungs are always getting a good workout, and towards the end i always increase the speed or sprint to a finish before slowing down and stopping. When you are used to running, you will be able to know that point that you can keep and maintain for a good distance.

If you look at olympic runners you see that their stride is longer then the casual runner. Its more legs and hips then back and chest and arms.
They have their backs straight and are very relaxed in their upperbody and breed deep breaths and their pulse is almost the same as when they are walking (this is in the middle of the race when they are fighting for position for the sprint).
Once they are in this pace then they can continue for hours. And this is when you get "runners high" which is beautiful :D

I didn't read all posts becouse is to much to read and i dont have to many patience, but i read first and i can tell to "he who snorts gunpowder" that cycling is one thing and running is another thing. Even if you consider that you use the same muscles in the both competition, when you run, you have a lot of bones wich is implicated in this effort, i mean is about of your weight, what did you eat before runing, how much you eat before running, how fit you are (you say you are fit), how many kg you have in the backsack(if you have one)....In april this year i use to run 3000m in about 11,45-50 secs, becouse i was training for the legion, but after that distance i cant make another run. Now i can run 3000m in about 14 mins, but i can keep this rithm for about 20 km more, that is a diference in running, what do you prepare for. Excuse me if i cant be understanding better,my english is poor, i know, and i just come from work (yes, i have a job now, i work 13 hours/day) after that i need to train for my first real Marathon wich will be in Octomber 20 in Bucharest. So man, enjoy your runing every day and if you want to join to legion just let the bicicle and take the runing shoes...

Mugur,
I am not particular good in cycling. However, considering your comments about running I agree, In general, with u Mugur. It so difficult being good in both e.g. "shorter" distances like 3000m as well as "longer" 10km, half Marathon, full Marathon etc. And then as u also pointed out running with Bergen - the "pain" arrives like an express train almost at the start.

And remember where you heard it first and WHO FROM, (pongo numpty) :D ROYAL OF COURSE.
As one of our OC's use to say on a monday morning after a weekend on the piss (still half pissed of course), "Remember men, The Body Is Evil, It Must Be Punished" and off we'd go, you didn't need to be an Indian tracker to follow the trail of sick and pish and shit to find us.
