Anybody who has read the book or seen the televison series "Band of Brothers" following the exploits of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division will be aware of "Shifty Powers".

His character appears in all 10 episodes of the television series with Shifty interviewed in many of them.

Shifty joined the 101st in 1941 and having completed his training at Toccoa went on to partake in operational jumps into Normandy on "D Day" and into Holland during Op. Market Garden.

Following his final battle, this time with cancer, Shifty died on 17th June 2009

And so the original "Band of Brothers" dwindles once more but although age and illness finally accomplishes what no enemy could all those years ago in Europe Shifty and all of his "brothers" will live on with gratitude and respect in my memory and after I am gone in the memory of my children.

Those securing the final DZ have another wonderful member in their midst tonight.

Thank you Shifty for helping to secure our freedom and peace you have now earned your opportunity to rest in peace.

Two years ago I met the man and a few of the survivors of that famed unit at the national 101 reunion. Last year they had it in Reno but I missed that particular one. In August I will attend my VN Bn reunion in Nashville and it will be good so see my boys again.

As all of us veterans, no matter what unit or nation in which we served , we enjoy seeing old comrades and telling the same stories of actions past.
