The above links to an article discusing a joint French Navy-Indian Navy exercise. As an aside ,France had 4-5 colonies in India. Pondicherry and Mahe were 2 of them. Believe there were 2-3 more on the Indian subcontinent.

The French 'counters' in India were 5 : Pondichéry, Chandernagor, Mahé, Karikal and Yanaon. They were all handed over back to India in the early 50s. Their inhabitants were offered the French citizenship and some took it. Like in any other former colonies there are still there « anciens combattants » (veterans) who fought in the French army.
