Hey guys,

While stuck here in Santiago waiting for my flight out after 3 weeks of suffering in the mountains :p, I was doing some relaxing and reading about Roman legionnaires and their battles against Vercingetorix, Boudicca, the Teutoberg Forest, etc.
Found out that a Roman Legionnaire, when he enlisted, enlisted for 25 years. The last 5 years were given to lighter, veteranīs duties. Can you imagine signing that piece of paper?
Times were tough back then.
Anyway, thatīs our useless piece of information for the day.

Salut

SalutIf the Roman dudes survived to tell their tales at the end of 25 years, they were given a plot of land to cultivate in conquered territories. One of these colonies was Colonia Nemausus for the veterans of the Nile campaigns or Colnem. This historical connection to Roman legionnaires is carried in the city shield of Nîmes with a crocodile chained to a palm tree to symbolise the conquest of this hood and above the COLNEM acronym. Nîmes is the base of the 2eREI since end of 1983. The legionnaire presence in Nîmes has a long-standing precedent.
