Question:
what kind of plausible answer do you recommend I give to the recruiter when he asks me “Why do you want to join the Legion, "What are you doing here”? What’s the best way to “sell” myself, and make them notice I mean it? Could you tell me if the kind of answer/reasons I give to the recruiter (Gestapo) is that important? Could this determine if I’m a good candidate for being accepted?

Answer:
It's quite important to present yourself in a favorable manner. Your initial contact with the Legion will be through recruiters both at the recruiting office where you enlist, and Aubagne. It is they who form the first impression of you and ultimately decide whether or not you will be accepted.
A lot depends on their estimation of you. Someone with strong physical characteristics and other positive abilities can be rejected if he's seen to be a troublemaker or a potential problem later on. It's necessary to display a genuine interest in the Legion, show some self-restraint and discipline, and be reasonably intelligent, among other things.
To sell yourself just be honest about why you want to join. You obviously have a lot of interest in the Legion already. If you're the least bit enthusiastic when you talk with them it will show through and invariably help. You also need to properly evaluate your motivations for wanting to join. Things like wanting to become a French citizen, earning money, or having a roof over your head are valid reasons but aren't the appropriate motivators the Legion seeks from its soldiers.

Note: I'm not going to reveal the source because I have not asked him permission to do so. But the answer comes from an Ancien.

Lethal.

When I was asked at Fort de Nogent why I wanted to join, I said for the aventure. It seemed to work well for me.

Yup, I said adventure to, they looked at me kinda weird and one day my name was called to go rouge. I was convinced they read the wrong list, sometimes wish they had :)
