Have the lot. Sharpe was based on Richard Sharpe, who captained England at Rugby. Position fly half. He has about 17 caps and his jaw was broken very badly in a game against the Springboks when he captained the British Lions. He was about 6'1",13 stones and fair haired.
On the internet I let the author into a little secret and it is possible that the post is there to be seen even now. Richard was 70 last month and he is also an Oxford Blue.
He was a Royal Marines National Service Officer based at the Infantry Training Centre RM in X troop under Maj.'Bull' Baven, which was the troop responsible for commando training of everyone including officers.
This was in 1958/9. He also represented the RN at rugby. Finally it was highly unusual for NS (Draft) men to be commissioned and to be accepted for NS you had to have been a member of the RM Forces Volunteer Reserve prior to call up and the final reserve committment was longer than the other British forces. In those days enlisted men signed on for a minimum 9 years with the option of leaving at 7. So he had to be switched on.
Bernard Cornwell was extremely chuffed that his fictional hero based on a rugby player had in fact also been a commando.
