Last year guys from most countries deserted this means if you are russian, polish, italian, english etc then be carefull..

He either made it and is in basic training, or he didn't make it and decided not to come back here and post about his experiences.

He left for Marseilles on the 25th of August. He last logged in on September 2nd, 8 days later. So he either spent a week having fun in Marseilles and the South of France before joining, and is now in basic training. OR he we and got rejected after less than a week and decided not to post anything about his experiences.

Perhaps time will tell.

The Legion has existed for more than 175 years, and the selection process is something that is working extremely well. The amounts of deserters are well within the expected levels and are even far lower than other armed forces.

I am afraid that in this case you are commenting and making suggestions on a subject that you know very little about. Therefore I kindly suggest that you refrains from making suggestions about how the Legion should work.:)

Nobody is going to give you any statistics simply because they are not officially available and you will have to take my word based upon my experience and a recent call (10 min ago) to an old colleague that is currently dealing with these matters.

First of all there are 3 different types of “deserters”:
Those who get “stuck” between the legs of a girlfriend and makes their way to their Regiment within 3 days (in some cases 5 days). Those who for some reason runaway but gets arrested or returns to the Legion by their own will within 90 days. It should be noted that those who comes back after more than 90 days will not be accepted back, but condemned in a civilian court by French law. Finally those who are real deserters and goes back to their country and France and the Legion never hears from them anymore.

What we could finally call deserters are those who do not return by their own free will (gets arrested), or that the Legion never hears from again.

The exact annual figure is obviously not officially available, but it represents a grand total around 1%, something that is completely acceptable and expected from the Legion’s side.

On the other hand and for obvious reasons, other armies have very few such deserters and when we are comparing figures, we are talking about the total number (including the “short term guys”) where the Legion figures are much smaller than other armies.
Why? Simply because being late (even 5 min) from leave is something that is not taken lightly and a 15 days trip in “prison” is not so funny.
