I didn't really go for either Gladiator or Braveheart. I thought they were both too hollywoodified (its a real word look it up) and stretched the truth.
I always feel that if a film purports to be factual it has a duty to try and get it right.
My favourite film is U571, the one where the Yanks captured the Egnima machine.:D

Maybe it is linked with the incident on 27th August 1941 when Sub Lt. David Balme from HMS Bulldog recovered (NOT stole) a working Enigma machine from U110, 100 miles west of Iceland.
Or maybe not.

Both are great films and contraversially for a jock im going to say Gladiator as its the better directed film. Get the list of 'Bloopers' for Braveheart and look out for them next time its on, theres a transit van in one scene  You would need a bloody big stick to defend a charge from one of them.
And you need to watch Rob Roy if only for Brian Cox's patter:
Guthrie: Are you Rob Roy McGregor?
Rob Roy: I am.
Guthrie: I'm Will Guthrie, You heard of me?
Rob Roy: No, I have not.
Guthrie: Well, I've heard of you.
Rob Roy: Indeed, And what have you heard, Mr Guthrie?
Guthrie: I heard you backstabbed Tam Sibbald.
Rob Roy: Were you and Tam kin?
Guthrie: Near enough, I shagged his sister.
Killearn (Cox) :Likely so did Tam. :D

apparently the Enigma gig was a load of kak because it was not Americans but British that stole the Enigma.
Jonathan Mostow the Director recently apologised in the British press for not giving credit to the men of the Royal Navy who retrieved the Enigma cipher machine. Even Tony 'wheres my backbone' Blair condemned the movie on its release as, quite rightly, an "affront" to British sailors.

Scottsmen beating up the English ..... or...... Romans beating up the English ?
mmmmmm....thats a hard one !
Having been to Wallace monument , and woke up looking onto Robert the Bruce on his horse statue/monument thing (thats another topic ,maybe for another website!) has to be Braveheart .
True story .
Im living in New Zealand now and this Maori guy that works with me just finished his shift , we had a quick chat as he was leaving , he told me that he had watched Braveheart with his wife and afterwards his wife had mentioned how if you were Scottish you couldnt have a Scottish passport , you can only get a British one , he told here to stop being stupid , he said that Scotland was a country and that you must be able to get one .
So he asked me to settle the argument they had had .
I told him that she was right , it has to be a British one .
He couldnt believe it , and I felt like shit .

Gladiator - for the action scenes and Russell Crowe.
Braveheart - for all the other reasons to see a good film.
