Joette:
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, for the link!!!!!!!!!!! I am an old timer, almost 50 who loved Combat--and "the Gallant Men" in the 1960s. The link was great!!!!!!!!!!!!! I imagine that the reason I served in the Army was because of Combat.
Again, what a trip down memory lane! *coughs* gags* spits* cackles like old timers do as he waves his cane*
Again, well done Joette!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I watched Rat Patrol on TV. In the beginning of every show it showed a Jeep jumping off a dune, trailing sand. I drove a Jeep during my first sejour in Tchad. The sorties were long and hard and so things can be "on edge." I was not happy with my chef de vehicle, an MDL. As I drove, I told him and the Legionnaire in the backseat about the show, Rat Patrol. I accelerated the Jeep as I told them about jumping over the dune. I said that I was going to do it. They both said don't. I was defiant, I went faster. Ahead was a not a dune but a hill of sand. I hit it as fast as the Jeep would go. All four wheels came off the ground. Instead of skidding to a stop it fell like a rock.....then skidded. The AA52 was pointing up and trailing bullets. A box of grenades popped open and spilled. We had to walk back and collect everything that had spilled from the Jeep. The Legionnaire in the back hurt his back on the landing. He had a radio around his neck. It was one of the dumbest things that I ever did. I was lucky that the Jeep did not break an axle or spring. That would have required some explaining...and some disciplinary action. The MDL was new to our Escadron, being transferred from the First. He was a MFer trying to prove something. I developed some respect for him when he did not rat me out in the Jeep jump...but he was still a rpick.

Great show, "Combat"--folowed a squad all around France and some in Italy, during WWII--I guess you all know about how Vic Morrow, the Sergeant and star of the show, died--he was filming the first "Twilight Zone" movie, and there was a scene with a helicopter coming in for a pick up--something went wrong, and it crashed--the blade cut Vic in half, along with the Vietnamese girl he was holding. Very tragic. "Rat Patrol" was pretty good too. Christopher George was the star, and he was chasing the Germans all over North Africa.
My first assignment upon arriving in Nimes, was into CEA--and into section SER. I thought of myself as in the Rat Patrol. Wasn't there too long though, as I was sent off to Stage Trans, and then to 4th Cie, Section Commandment, where I stayed for the remainder of my contract. All in all, a great experience.
yeah i remember combat and the rat patrol series,i only watched them as reruns but they were great, kinda the reason why i became a cav scout.anybody remember the tour of duty series?,came out in the late 80's,about infantry grunts in vietnam
