Hi!
As most people here, I stumbled upon this forum while searching for information about the FFL.
I've had it bookmarked for months but never really bothered to read it or sign up, until now.
Very much informative, I appreciate how everyone is so helpful towards the wannabes like me, there's a massive amount of information in these forums, which is good! You can never be too well informed, right?
About me, well I am 20 years old, born and living in Mexico and heard about the FFL some 6 months ago, online. I saw a documentary which is on google video(just search for french foreign legion) and I was very interested.
Since a few years ago I've been looking into doing military service in order to obtain citizenship in Europe(or Canada). I never really got serious about it, it was just in the back of my head until I heard about the FFL, it's perfect for what I've been wanting. I, of course, am extremely interested in doing the military service itself, even though nobody seems to understand that. People these days, eh?
I hope to do my 5 years and become a French citizen, live a few years there and get a degree in a good Uni, travel around and maybe come back to my country. I have an endless amount of respect for France as a country, and would love to call it my home some day.
I am currently aiming for France in about 1-2 years, just have some stuff to do first. I'm learning French, preparing physically, saving money(have to get corrective eye surgery), etc. I plan to be very well prepared, but I of course am realistic and realize that nothing is guaranteed!
I'm interested in the backgrounds of other wannabes in this board, you guys mind sharing?
I'll be around. :D

Yes you are ina very good position. Most people on here would advise you to do some service in your own country first if you have the chance, if you havent got any prior will say.
Promised a friend to do some travelling first and then book my return ticket back to france. So i will be there a months after you if everything goes right.
As I said if selected i hope I will be able to be a Medic some day coz from that Ill get a trade and hopefully be able to do a long sevice. But selection is first and the rest will come later i suppose

Yeah, i would follow that advice, i'm twenty seven, so not getting any younger and what to commit to something now:) couldn't believe it when they said 24 months wait for my job...its a very good job...gunna talk to them about switching to RMs but need to sharpen fitness - January - Legion/RMs, we will see what happens - funny thing, whenever i train i always have the legion in my head, never anything else? motivates me more...?
Good luck with medic job, i haven't thought passed making rouge - its a great plan to do a bit of travelling before...might have to think about that too.

But you have to work your as off for a couple off years and have a good knowledge of French.....Focus on the French language..there were two non-francophones out of fifteen or so trainees when I did my medic's course...i was more or less fluent in French....Mantovani is Italian and former pharmacist: he came first in the promotion: he beat all them frenchies....

It's one of the best sources of information about the legion in the web. If in the future you want to put another post I recomend to update your profile... more people will be encouraged to help you in this way (specially the anciens).
Good luck in your preparation and training.

Thanks everyone!
As many of you said, I would love to have done some military service in my own country but sadly the state of affairs in the Mexican Army is not too pretty. You never do anything military, you just work on checkpoints and other mindless jobs. Of course, you live extremely poorly and get paid virtually nothing and get treated awfully and other thousand horrible things. :p
The only one worth anything would be the special forces, but you need to do some years in the normal Army first.
Oh well.
