well think about it.. humans have been walking and running without shoes for a few millions of years.. evolution was meant for us to be barefooted.. imagine if we came out of mom with nikes on! ouch!
in 1960 the winner of the olympic marathon ran barefooted because he was new to shoes; and thought they were very uncomfertable..

i've thought alot about conditioning my feet to run barefoot, posturally it's better than running in shoes. really just laziness on my part not starting.
good for you.

if you build your feet up to running barefoot you will, at least some studies and research shows, be less prone to ankle and foot injuries than shoes wearers.
motto
what makes running barefoot an advantage? and will the legion alow you to do the test without shoes?

i have reached a level higher than 12 on the beep test.. at those levels your shoes slide because of the speed of ur turnabout to reach the other line.. I dont think ur feet would slide without shoes thus maybe reaching a level 17 and beyond?

Shaka Zulu trained his worriers to run with out sandles or raped leather over, thorns, broken branches, stones, dry grass and hot coals... if you never walked the corse, you were killed or bannished.... he was a clever and powerfull Headmen, think they would have created a bigger problem for Westerners if the Zulu's were past the beginning of the iron age... ; p

There is a very good article about this in the current issue of men's health magazine here in the states. It is essentially about an indian tribe in the boonies of Mexico called the Tarahumara who are like running legends. There was a 55 yr old Tarhumara runner who won the Leadville ultramarathon and some guy who went to study their running techniques and lifestyle spoke of a 95 yr old doing a cross country trek.
There are now running shoes like the Vibram fivefinger and the nike free trail that are designed to mimmick running without shoes...with the added protection against the obvious. http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/.custom_core/design/user/img/index-big-image.jpg
I don't run barefoot but I took nearly a minute and a half off of my two mile run time by running on the balls of my feet and not the heels.

Thansk sgt - always wanted to try barefoot but never really gave too much commitment beacause I don't want injury...these look like they would help the transission...
Very interesting tiopic too, wouldn't mind reading the tarahumara article - is this available on line anywhere?

ancient hawaiian worriers trained by running bare foot. they trained by running over sharp lava rocks and boulders in areas that off road vehicles dont even travel over today. King Kamehameha the great was said to be the fastest in his tribe in the times befor he counqured the Island chains.

here is a picture of how u should land with shoes or without....
warning:running without shoes will hurt your ankles at first because they have weakend during all them years we wore running shoes. Your calve muscles have shrunk in size because of our 3 inch lower than it should be heel made by our favorite shoe companies. And the fact that we somehow shifted to run heel firts.. So go easy at first, learn how to walk barefoot first (look at diagram)
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/861/footdrawrc8.jpg
Notice: you might land diffrently because of your foot shape, but the idea of running on the ball of your feet is there..
and get rdy to get ur feet looking like this lol
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/7436/fettobt8.jpg
Though, notice where the blisters are.. they are all located on the High Contact zone.. RUnning this way is painfree when running shoeless on pavement, asphalt. Though the blisters are normal as we have weakend the leather since birth under our soles by wearing running shoes..
anyways have fun haha :p

the tarahumara tribe of mexico are known to be the best distance runners in the world. they use a special sandal basically made of a flat piece of wood and some strings. its supposed to mock the natural way the human foot hits the ground while providing a bit of protection. one guy who lived briefly with the tarahumara, used the shoes for a period of a few months and said his foot size went from an american size 12 to 9. he also said that his back and need pain disappeared because his heel wasnt impacting the ground. i know nike came out with a shoe called the "free" that claimed to do something similar, but ive never seen anyone in them.
