I train after Fairbairn's manual "Get tough!" its ok but I think it the training would be more effective if I had a teacher/class to learn from.

manuals are ok sometimes but the draw back of a book is that it cant correct you if your doing something wrong. Also alot of times books take readers straight to the point and leave out alot of info.

Shootfighting. Best backpain I ever had.
Quite new, developed in the 40'ies. Lots of para units and others use it as cc training.

YAO, to find out things use internet WWW.GOOGLE.COM
Here is your answer though.
http://www.kravmagascotland.co.uk/History-of-Krav-Maga.aspx
Krav Maga was originally devised and created by Imi Lichtenfeld (1910 - 1998).
Originally from Bratislava this natural athlete, boxer and wrestler learned the basics of self-defence from his police instructor father before developing his skills during the dark times of European history in the 1930's.
After many years of struggle he went to Palestine and fought for the Independence of Israel. On creation of the state of Israel Imi became the Chief Instructor to the newly created Israeli defence force (IDF).
The technique's of hand-hand fighting he taught became known as Krav Maga - which translates as "Contact Combat"
After leaving the army in the 1960's Imi adapted Krav Maga to everyday life situations faced by men, women and children.
Over the years Krav Maga's blend of self-defence and hand-to-hand combat techniques have evolved to become recognised around the world as being an innovative, effective and highly practical method of teaching self defence.
http://www.kravmaga-nottingham.co.uk/images/homepage.jpg
Krav Maga continues to adapt to the ever changing world, both globally and locally, under the guidance of Chief Instructor Eyal Yanilov, and members of the Global Instructors team.
In addition to the obvious benefits and uses of Krav Maga for the law enforcement and military communities, everyone - whether they are male, female, young or old - across the world can feel more confident and safer by developing their natural instincts for self defence with Krav Maga.
I FIND THAT KRAV MAGA IS GREAT, IT SHOWS YOU TO TAKE YOUR OPPONENT TO THE GROUND IN THE QUICKEST WAY, GIVING YOU TIME
TO LEAVE QUICKLY.

And if you do get into close combat with him, count on him having a mate aiming at your neck. Its not comfortable fighting in a tacvest but its better then a head shot. nuff said. keep your head down

Run Fu.
I work on it religiously. :D
For fun, Muay Thai.
Otherwise, the best martial art is the 5.56mm round coming from the business end of my buddy's rifle...cuz I messed up by allowing myself to:
1) miss with all my rifle rounds
2) miss with all my pistol rounds
3) miss with all my grenades
4) miss with my knife
5) not run away fast enough
Martial arts are a great way to work on physical fitness, aggression, performance under pressure, etc...but working on hand-to-hand combat with the anticipation of using it in "combat" (as in on the battefield) is probably best left to the movies. Smart bombs, laser sights, automatic weapons rule the day now.
Then again, I'm just a civi, what the hell do I know. :)

Boxing and san shou here. A lot more boxing than san shou. FYI, BJJ doesn't automatically trump striking arts. Case in point: Cro-cop. If you wanna know how to fight, spar. I've said it before and I'll say it again, a combination of boxing and/or muay thai and bjj and/or wrestling will make you a well-rounded fighter and formidable opponent. I'd take up a grappling art if I had the time. And let's face it, if you get into a streetfight, chances are you're not looking to gouge your opponents eyes out and snap his neck... that's a mandatory life sentence right there. On the contrary, you just want to beat him senseless.

he got slobbered by a ju jutsi fighter in this fight.. how u suppose to strike when on the floor?
1. just because some jiu jitsu fighter beat an opponent who is a striker, or visa versa, doesn't make it some sort of steadfast universal absolute. fights are fights. outcomes can also change when the same fight is duplicated over and over. especially in a running series scenario, the psychological game becomes more sophisticated.
2. striking on the floor-- it's usually called pankration, and a well rounded fighter can strike up or down, and transition from striking to grappling and back again as per the progression of the fight.
pro fights tend to be much more technical than the ametuers. it can be more of a chess match cause a stray punch or kick can result in a knock-out. especially at pro level it becomes a battle of mental endurance: who fatigues and makes a mistake first.

Hey guys,
Ouch, sorry to hear about you and your girl DevilD.
I currently train boxing at a gym here in Korea, lot of decent guys but no one in my weight class, though I am only 87-88 Kg, 188cm.
About 2 years ago I was training up at Team Quest in Oregon. I was ok on stand up, but sucked on the ground compared to the guys at TQ (a bunch of top MMA guys like Matt Lindland and Randy Couture run Team Quest). I was tapping out left and right.
Before that I used to train with Chris Clarke in Oregon (top student of Dan Inosanto), he is up in Washington now. He teaches JKD, lots of Kali and a fair bit of Muay thai but he didnt teach much ground fighting.
Back in the day I trained Karate for 3 years in High school in Hawaii (Roosevelt High School Class of 88), I grew up in Makiki and Manoa area myself! :)
I Miss Muay Thai and Kali ...but really wish there was some ground fighting here in Korea, nothing that I have found yet, and I am in the suburbs so anything would probably be a while away.
DevilD your school is Damn good! Looks like the training is set up better than it was at TQ, Team Quest has a great team but it was rough on new guys trying to learn the ground game. No real intro class, you are thrown right in. Granted there are pro's and con's to that method but some of the more skilled guys were brutal and were more interested in tapping me out than teaching me. No fun. I think it has expanded and changed a bit now, the Head Instructor Robert Follis is awesome, if you ever get a chance to train with him.
ANyway I am off to boxing. :)
Hard to not want to use knees, elbows, kicks and dirty boxing in the ring I tell ya~!

Hey i was away for almost twp weeks but now im back so here is my martial art history.
I hold a brown belt in karate, i started when i was ten, was there for 5 years.
During that time i learned to go down in a split and concentration and kicks and kata, but i realized that i was too agressive to be there, so when i was 16 i started in Shintai its something between ju juitso, thai and kickboxing. I hold a brown belt there too and in a year or so i might go for black. Shintai is great because we sometimes put on all the protection we have and go fucking crazy. its also great for speed and concentration. I tried judo, but i can walk around and hug my friends whenever i want so i skipped that one.

After I left the corps I was still an aggressive gorrilla. I needed to get rid of the aggression as its not that acceptible in civvy street. It tends to worry people doesn't it!! Especially when its aimed at them or near them!
Anyway, the art worked as in Ninjutsu aggression is seen as a sign of weakness. If you train in this art, you'll know what I mean.

Read a book about a martial artistwho went to japan to study with the last ninja family in japan/the world and these three elderly brothers who resembled nothin' but a mere whisper of what the ninja used to be still gave him a hiding and a thrashing!!!!
Although intriguing this book had a very sad side in it's telling of the ninja's slow and painful demise and how three tattered scrolls,a broken sword, and a mothe eaten suit with degraded armour is all that's left of possibly the worlds greatest combatants/assasins!!!:(

Personally from what i have done by now i think boxing is the best for

There was one Italian guy, big, shaved head, never spoke. Kind of this dark mysterious figure. He would practice martial arts during breaks in back of the selection building in the 'exercise yard' closer to the Foyer entrance. I didn't see him, but apparently the other guys were all impressed, spinning jump kicks, flips and all kinds of cool flash stuff. Really fast, flexible and a big muscular strong guy.
Well anyway we all expected him to ace the tests, he was slowly fitting in, he even said a few monosyllabic words (he wasn't even talking to the Italian guys).
But on the Luc Leger he apparently died at about level 3 or 4 and dropped out and was sent home immediately. The sprinting killed him which was surprising...(unless he threw the test and WANTED to go home)
So stuff the Martial arts and practice running, and French.
Another story; There were two loud obnoxious Rouge guys, both French who went around yelling and starting fights a NUMBER of times, ALWAYS with smaller weaker guys. I didn't get it, they even started fights and had to be pulled away in the Salle a Manger in sight of all the Legion staff. But STILL they stayed. Either they had some relative in, or they were desperate for Francophones.
I was sick of their shit and one night I lost my temper and started a fight with one cause he got in my face and I was sick of seeing him pick on the little guys including one of the tiny Mafia Anglais' "adopted" little brothers, a funny, fast talking, slightly obnoxious Moroccan kid who was orphaned at a very young age. Anyway one of the aforementioned assholes smashed "Ali's" nose in. I almost attacked the guy in the Foyer but my friends pulled me back.
But when I did fight the guy, I hit him several times and he never even touched me, so much for the big mouth. Most of the bullies operate on fear and making a big scene and lots of noise, puffing out their chests and usually have a compatriot or two behind them at all times. Ridiculous.
(The fight wasn't the reason I got sent home as I was there another week and got cut at Rouge selection, none of the staff saw the fight).
The real tough guys kept quiet and kept their heads down and did what they were told (not saying I was one of them, haha, I obviously didn't do well at laying low). I know some guys with more patience were just biding their time till Castel (a few of the Russians and Brazilians).
Anyway don't worry too much about MA, if you are doing EVERYTHING else you are supposed to be doing, then sure, if you have time Boxing or Kickboxing or Jujitsu or whatever the flavor of the year is can be fun (it always seems to vary depending on the latest tv shows, movies, or which top fighter is winning in K-1 or the UFC and what system he trains in, etc). But it isn't going to make you a better candidate or a better soldier. Most of that is mental, or basic good fitness and language ability.
Best bet besides French and good overall fitness is serving in your OWN military first, which a lot of the young guys on here seem NOT to want to do. Something that totally boggles my mind. I only went to France BECAUSE I couldn't serve in the US Forces. I have friends in Iraq and Afghanistan now, wish I could serve, not that I have a death wish but I figured all of us crazy mf's who want to join the Legion share that kind of insanity in common.
Anyway I am rambling...

And as a last point, I saw a video on youtube of the 2 REI that showed a group of legionnaires having a roll in the middle of africa, looked like submission wrestling, something I did for a few years and loved and am glad it looks like I'd get a chance to take it up again if I got in. That and with all the south americans in now I can't believe there isn't a brazilian ju jitsu influence.

Daughter does martial arts and a few Saturdays ago she walked home from class on her own, with a t-shirt they had given her saying:
"I DO BJ" on the front and on the back it read "ASK ME ABOUT BJ".
Proud as can be she was. She is 9 and has no idea what BJ stands for except Brazilian Jujitsu.
Needless to say, the t-shirt is now used for cleaning the windows. :-)

good hard punch to the nose works for me i am a 2d dan in joudo never ever used it for any thing but fittness ;)...Kata in the dark and at dawn in Bouar, RCA, starting with a basic kibadashi over 3 months with C/c Pandron from the French regular para reg and some basic and excrutiating karate stretching exercises was all I managed in this vein....and know the vital points to hit....otherwise the FFL bedside stool was always handy but never swung it to connect with a body...just threw up in the air and over some lockers at pillow height for any recalcitrant legionnaires at morning roll call...

Loco,
Now THAT sounds cool...I was in Thailand for almost 2 weeks down south doing diving a couple months ago. Wanted to do a lot more things and really explore, but went with my girl friend and had to stay on her schedule (what was I thinking? You don't take your girlfriend to thailand!) haha

the art you choose depends on what suits you (and your body structure) best and what you personally think is coolest. that may sound crude or dumb, but the cooler you think the art is, the more youll be able to motivate yourself to stick with it. in the end, its the man with more muscle memory, speed, experience and better reflexes who will prove victorious, regardless of their size or the art they studied.

i studied GO-KAN-RYU karate for a number of years, under robert sullivan, one of the finest martial arts exponents in the world.
last year, the club won both mens and womens open in the al styles comp. its a very reputable club that i higly recommend.

anyone practice any martial arts? (outside of what the legion teaches) Feeling bord so i just wanted to see what people post. I started in Chinese Kempo then moved on to Judo and now im thinking of trying Arnis/escrima....the FFL didn't teach me any martial arts except getting hold of swinging stool if need be inside billets 'pour encourager les autres' and 'calmer les esprits'....everything else involving martial arts included swinging a rifle butt or using a baionette outside billets....just don't expecting martial arts Heaven in the FFL: there might be some martial arts or not depending on the cadre, ie in regiment or during commando training course, but legionnaires are already hot-headed enough or can be wound up easily to teach them too much about beating up people especially civilians in town...in fact, all the corvée/chores regime is designed to tone down any inherent aggression beheaviour patterns...the only time you're primed to kill is in specific scenarios like in Gulf War in 1991, that is, just before a major land offensive: Opération Daguet in support of the Allied coalition between NATO, Western and Arab states to turf Saddam out of Kuwait....until then, you'll just have to wait....
