Does anyone know what the main nationalities are. Out of 8500 in the Legion I would guess about 300 American 200 Canadian 200 British 200 French 300 Chinese, but that is probably all wrong.

Half of the Legion is made up of French-origin nationals with "Canadian", "Luxembourger" and "Swiss" nationality.

I would guess there are only about 50 Americans currently serving in the Legion, if that!!! For some reason Americans would not even think about serving in another country's army. I dont know exactly why, but I reason its because of national pride. I would assume 50-100 Canadians, 50-100 UK residents, and like 50 from Austrialia/NZ. Non-francophones are definitely outnumbered! Aaahhh. :D

Kaztraz,
Have you scanned the legionnaire's handbook you promised the board ?

So in what category are the Greeks?

Greeks are Slavs i think.
Satyr, this diagram does not tell me much. Most of the Slavs speak different languages and are different in their ways. I would like to know how many ex-Yugo are there in the Legion. Arnaude, what is Azeri?
Thank you

The le has had members from 176 countries, past and present. That is pretty much everywhere. Azerbaijan is a *relitively* new country, though, so there might not be azaris

Greeks are Slavs i think.Hey man we are NOT Slavs. Greeks and Albanians are the only non Slav people in the whole Balkans peninsula. Now if you meant that under this chart we should fall under the Slav category it is another matter. We have no relationship with the Slavs neither racially nor in language. By the way is it an official chart?

i may be the one to set the record as being the first that might increase my chances of being acceptedI'm sure that there have been people from this country go and join. It's not a very rich place and I'm sure that the EU passport would be very appealing to many people there. And if the Legion feels you are immature and an idiot they aren't going to care where you are from, because you will be going out on your ass.

im sure that there have been people from this country go and join. John, I agree with you.
I think that there have been Azeris who have at least tried to join la Légion.
“I would like to mention one point as well that many Armenian living abroad in great numbers were recruited for the French Foreign Legion army.”, Mr. Robert Arakelov has said. (Story by Azade Balayeva)
We can make stab at how many different nations there are in the Légion, but probably will never get the right answer…
My two cents worth.

If there are Armenians in the Legion right now, i dont think id like to have him as my roomate or much less even work with him. There has been a war with these people.

If you have a strong dislike for any given nationality DO NOT JOIN the Legion. You may never know who you'll meet there and if you get in some sort of 'ethnic fight' with another legionnaire, you'll be sent « en taule » (in jail) at best or given the boot at worst.

If it means fighting for the Legion i will be ok with him. But in terms of friendship or socializing then no.

Why do i have the feeling that some of the people here have not any real reason (they are not even romantics) for joining other than to show off later?

Yeah. They are also the ones who never get on the Plane. But they wont let that stop them from spreading tales of "their time" in the French Foreign Legion.
