Synopsis:
Steven Preece was a Royal Marine Commando from 1983 to 1990, serving first at entry-level and then as a lance-corporal. Amongst the Marines is Steven's first-hand account of his years as an elite soldier, focusing directly on the excessive and often shocking lifestyle of the Marines during this time, and the impact this had on his own personality and behaviour.Preece fulfilled his childhood ambition by earning the coveted Green Beret from the Commando Training Centre at Lympstone when he was 18. He was unaware, however, of the brutal rite of passage that awaited him and all the other "pieces of skin" (new recruits) at his first Marine commando unit. Violence in the Marines, as Steven discovered, was not limited to the battlefield but a continual part of a pervasive culture of bullying and aggression. It did not take long for Preece to be accepted into this culture and to adopt it as his own. His personality changed beyond recognition from friendly and approachable to hard and unforgiving as he embraced the customs and values of the 45 Commando Unit. On duty he was fit, committed and loyal, while off duty he displayed a mammoth capacity for drinking, fighting and, when the drink had run out, womanising. On home leave, Steven found it increasingly hard to adapt to civilian life. His drinking sessions in local pubs frequently ended in fights with the locals and even in violence against members of his own family. Preece earned a reputation amongst his fellow Marines for pranks and dangerous behaviour, and his eagerness to accept any challenges from other commandos eventually led him to be court-martialled. To his relief and surprise, however, Preece was fully acquitted by the court.Amongst the Marines is an unflinching expose of the culture of the Marines, from foul practical jokes and rough justice to the off-duty orgies of drink, sex and violence. It is a no-holds-barred account of the many shocking incidents Preece witnessed and participated in, from his first day as a new recruit to his exit from the Marines with his reputation intact and his scores settled once and for all.

Quite a good read, not of any real use for anyone looking for information about the Royal Marines but an excellent read for anyone wondering exactly what goes on when a Bootneck has a run ashore.
The author got quite a bit of stick on the British Military Forums for bringing the Corps into disrepute through stories of excessive violence, ill treatment of women and the general public and of course sheep shagging.

Steve- Ashby's book is ace. He was a qualified MAW and ML man. Possibly
the hardest endurance course in Brit armed forces. Sadly after getting the
kidnapped guys to safety and after receiving a gallantry gong he has become
very ill. He is the shadow of the very big guy he once was. His disease is
bone and muscle debilitating. He has been invalided out.

Thought Amongst the Marines was a very enjoyable book, and intriguing. For example, Preece gets beaten up by fellow Marines. Later, he gets them back. Then, they come and thank him for beating them up and state that it was the right thing to do. This kind of thing is very hard to understand for an office boy like me.

Also, according to Preece, the Marines seem to shit everywhere. No joking, in the book the Marines really do play around with their own shit a lot.

Is there a fomer or serving Marine in the forum who could comment on how true the book is?

Guilty as charged.

I have heard that Arbroath Smokies are the tastiest thing on earth. But then it was a jock who told me that.

I will have to check out this book by Ashby.

I've read this book probably 5 times, it's a very good read and very motivational for anyone thinking about joining an elite force.

Well I guess I've joined this thread at the right minute. I'm steven Preece and the Author of Amongst The Marines and Always A Marine. (The sequal)

My first book was warts and all, as it was at that time, so was my second one.

Amongst The Marines caused a hell of a stare when it was first released but it was based on fact. My second book seemed to calm the storm.

best Regards

Steve
