View Full Version : Stings
Today while running I noticed that I got some stings under my left rib cage. I thought it didnt really matter so I contiuned running. Then I noticed it spread from left to right and I could only breathe very shallow.. Ruined my complete workout as I only managed to walk the rest  What is that crap and how do I prevent it?
ps... Yes I am an untrained fool :p Trying to fix that tho

it depends on what stung you.if its a bee/waspy thing try viniger.that uselly sorts it oot..
No, it wasnt a bug or anything that stung me... Anyways I thought stings was the English name of "hold".. I've had it before and was able to work out even tho.. But never as severe as this. Quite painful.

breathe deeply in rhythm with your stride and think it away. take motrin, drink water =) stay hydrated, get enough minerals in your diet. training only sucks for those that don't do it consistently. each run is easier than the last. they'll go away. i'm assuming that this "sting" you're feeling is a cramp. you can get them all over your guts, back, chest, ect.

The word you are looking for is a stitch. You got a stitch.

Yip . Its a stich . Not sure but you can usually run though them ( keep running and it will go away) . I think that this may be linked to dehydration but not 100% sure. Its painfull but not an injury or anything so you ll be ok as you keep training ;)

It could be a lack of electrolyte minerals, causing your muscles to cramp up. Electrolyte muscles include magnesium, potassium, calcium. Lack of these can cause problems in the transmission of electrical signals across the muscles, resulting in cramp or spasm.
OR it could be that you are running too fast, too soon and tying yourself up by going into oxygen debt. And causing a stitch!:D
It is very important to top up electrolytes(especially in the heat), particularly potassium, as this regulates the impulses for the heart muscles.

A stitch is cramp in your diaphragm muscle.
It's both low electrolytes, which makes cramp easier to get, and lack of oxygen, which causes lactic acid build up in the muscles.
Three solutions: 1. Get fitter so your cardio system pushes more oxygen to the muscles and you don't cramp as soon, 2. get your electrolytes right with isotonic drinks and good diet and hydration and 3. when running, breathe deep and evenly, and purse your lips so you're breathing out against resistance. This stretches the diaphragm muscle, improves blood flow in it, and staves off the stitch.

I use to get them all the time, a good source of electrolytes is gator aid or other "sports"drinks, being hydrated doesnt necessarily mean drink water. Water in great amounts is very bad for the human body as water doesnt hold the necessary electrolytle and minerals need for body after work out replenishment, drink water but try to add"sportdrinks" also to the mix.

Bad for you if you drink too much of them. There's usually sugar in them, whcih is bad for the teeth. Just read the label and remember to factor in what you're getting from the drink when you're paying attention to your diet.

I drink a half bottle of Powerade before and after training, seems to keep me hydrated, stay away from fizzy sportsdrinks like Lucozade.

if ya don't like sports drinks or they're not convenient you can make up for it with you're diet. i personally don't drink them, but i eat alot of different foods plus take a high quality vitamin & mineral suppliment. minerals = micronutrients, electolytes are in this family. if ya drink 4-5 liters of fluid a day you'll dump excess water, cellular waste, and your runs will be more comfortable as a result.
