From a Canadian guy who spent 6 months in the Legion: [Only registered and activated users can see links]-2004 read this.

« At least 75% of the recruits are all young (17-18 yo) kids from France who are perfectly eligible to join the French Armée de Terre but want to be "cool" and join the Legion. »

No matter what you say, this was my first reaction of the EV at Nogent and Aubagne... But some made it and i didn't... yet :D

Though one thing he writes made me think of the way i was thinking at Nogent :
« The rest of the recruits are from either war torn countries or from countries so poor that the Legion pay would make them rich. If you live a good enough life to be able to read this on the internet then I'd strongly reconsider your reasons for joining. »

I met this guy who walked and caught rides for over 2000 km because he couldn't afford a train ticket. He slept in a tent at night and ate whatever he could find. He also told me some other stuff that i won't mention here lol.. He had a pure genuine reason to join.. He needed it more then i did in some ways. And this was the case of many more canditates that left with me after that one day in Aubagne... and in the end i knew i could have been the guy who took someone else's place, someone who might have needed it more then I..

weird huh? lol But it was funny he mentioned this, because i thought the same also.
"The best duties to get on are at the kitchen with the bearded CplC"

Yea i know him lol.. He is Spanish about 5'5 and has a big belly (like most cooks ;) ).. he knows me also lol he... He thought i was REALLY smart so made me serve the dessert (cheese and a banana lol) :D JEALOUS? :p

Fish, do you go out of your way to find crap, or does it just come to you? I will tell you right now that this bloke is a joke!!! First off, his big no-no is that the BSLE (Bureau de Sécurite de la Légion étrangère) does not just let anyone go, not even after 6 months, Which means he would be in Regiment and not just coming out of Castel. And with him being in Regiment even if he went to the BSLE and asked to go home, he would have seen some nice jail time then been laughed at. Your only chance is right after Castel in Aubagne. I have to go but ill be back with some more!

Ok...Second of all 75% of the EV's are not French, rather Eastern bloc; nationalities. Only about 15% are French on average. Yes there are alot of young EVs but according to the Legion and my experience the average age is 24. Also just because you live a good life is no reason NOT to join, that's just plain dumb! As i have said a numerous amount of famous and rich blokes served in the Legion for no other reason as i could tell then to be apart of something greater than "themselves" !
I am getting tired of hearing "oh me oh my, i come from a good familly. should i join the Legion" ? The guy who wrote that in my opinion did not ask to leave, rather was sent away and has hatred for the Legion much like you! I am not saying the Legion is perfect, well ok maybe i am.

Well that 'crap' came from Voltigeur's website lol... Anyway.. That was not the point of my post you silly lol. It was about how some of us, especially Canadians who might join for 'adventure' and someone else from Russia might join because he is starving in the street of Moscow... I never thought of it this way until i met some brave dudes with sad life cases... Makes you appreciate Canada but also makes u ashamed that you might take their chances away.... I am sure u have thought of that 2..

I too saw the post on that website and it brought me to wonder about my reasons for wanting to join the Legion. Eventually I came to the conclusion that reasons and answers are not required, certain life circumstances do not negate your direction in life itself.

To any hopefull legionnaire reading this, I ask that you too consider your reasons and answers. If you can suffice, then the Legion (in my opinion) is a challenge better suited to those who "don't ask questions".

When you have an unmistakable urge to join, then this is all the reason you will need. You believe in your superiors and more importantly you believe in yourself. From what I have been able to read, I now strongly believe in the Legion's values and want to serve under them.

Just to clarify (especially for the idiots on this Forum):

Asking a Question is:
1. Obtaining an answer to a problem
2. Obtaining useful Information
3. Exhibiting a lack of:
a. ability to hear Instructions
b. not believing in your Superior

Asking a Question on this Boad would be 2. Asking who you should shoot would be 3.

When I questioned my reasons I realised this : if you want to join the Legion, only join because you have the urge, do not do it because you hate your Life, your wife left you...etc A LEGIONNAIRE NEVER GIVES UP!

Hate your Life - Kill yourself, don't join the Legion
Your Wife Left You - Find a new one, don't join the Legion
Hate your Job - Apply for a new one, don't join the Legion

Do not associate FAILURE with the LEGION

"Oh I can't pay my Debts... I'll run off to the Legion"
"I can't Handle Life issues... I'll run off to the Legion"
"God, My Business is going Under... I'll run off to the Legion"

This is only my opinion, but I do not want to FIGHT with someone who
just gives up on things, put closure to failures, THEN consider the Legion.

Who cares if you are wealthy, come from a good family or have all the opportunities in the world available to you. When you join the Legion, you obviously give it all up - for what? FOR THE LEGION, Simple Biarch, Simple!

Then again, maybe you are just like Beau and want to shoot some Boo Boos :D

NOTE 1: This is just my opinion, the Legion itself might have a totally different View.
NOTE 2: My dislike for Fish is obviously shared by the Legion also :D

Why are so many people winjing on about this that and the other. I've never heard so many people winje on about reasons and what they hear, its seems as people are looking at an excuse not to go. The Legion is like life, you take or leave it, your always on about Aubagne, it's not aubagne you need to worry about it's Castel. Then after that it's your regiment, and who gives a shit who served the bananas, Christ will you grow up fish sauce ? Why don't people join the old way : you read about the Legion, pack your bag, jump on a plain or train, then arrive at Aubagne. Easy ay, picking dates what after shave dose the c/chef likes, just join and stop trying to get one over on each other. The only person you have to worry about is yourself, if you want the place you and only you can get it, if they think your not worth the risk then they will show you the gates.

[...] just join and stop trying to get one over on each other.Thought of joining for ten days and just went...no e-board, no discussion with anyone about joining...just an individual decision...Like others, I participate now in the board to avoid disappointment to others when I saw so many leave or desert: a waste of your time and the FFL's effort and scarce resources. Stop this bitching among wannabes and stop whinging..

Stop bitchin and friggin go!I will do EXACTLY that (although the bus ride will be a plane ride) when I am eligible to join the Legion. Until then I will mingle on this board and voice my opinion where I see fit. Will probably even scratch my arse too, just to out do you Beau :D
