I have heard that if you commit a smaller crime in France you might end up in Legion, as an option to the prison. Is this a BS or true?

That was that way before, petty criminals had the option to "join" the ffl, compared to being sent to prison, BUT this was ages ago early 1900, but today its not the way it works

BUT this was ages ago early 1900, but today its not the way it worksIf push came to shove, the French authorities would still empty their prisons. No hesitation. But for now, you're right, this choice is not formally given. Probably so before they get caught and sentenced.
