I saw the mention of a French paratrooper killed on a Canadian site...and my gut told me the fallen might be 2 REP. Sorry to see that I was correct.

Below some details released by the French MoD on what happened yesterday in the Tagab valley. Identities of the victims have not yet been officially released.
On Monday 7 June, a detachment was positioned a few kilometers from COP (Combat OutPost) 51. French doctors with the support of Afghan soldiers organised medicals in the village of Payendakhel. Around one hundred Afghans were received in a few hours, of whom more than a half were women and elderly.
By mid-afternoon, a unit of the task force Surobi, covering the operation is attacked by a group of insurgents trying to infiltrate into the village where relief operations are taking place.
A first legionnaire is hit by a RPG shot and dies during evacuation. Then three others are hit by bullets.
The insurgents receive heavy damage when the task force troops strike back and are routed.
Surobi GTIA and an Afghan kandak (battalion) operate from forward combat positions (COP - combat outpost) Hutnik (formerly COP 46) and 51 which were built through the joint efforts of the brigade La Fayette, particularly the TF Altor which arms the Surobi GTIA since January, and Afghan security forces of the 3rd Brigade.
Since the commitment of French troops in the region of Kapisa / Surobi, Afghan forces have gradually expanded their area of control and influence, building on foundations built on land previously controlled by insurgents.
With the establishment of the last COP, COP 51, in early April, the ANSF are now able to ensure a permanent presence along the Tagab Valley, an area formerly controlled by insurgents. Today six COP are distributed along the valley between the bases of Tagab and Naghlu. From these positions, Afghan forces, with the support of French military, conduct operations to gradually extend their zone of action.

The MoD spokesman said today that one of the legionnaires wounded in the same action, who was in a serious medical condition, had a surgery at Kabul military hospital and is no longer in danger. He'll be evacuated to France in the next days.

The identity of the 2°REP Sergeant KIA in Afghanistan on 7. June was officially released : as mentioned earlier, his name was Sgt Konrad Rygiel. Below some biographical details about him given by the Army Staff, as published on "Secret Défense" blog :
[Only registered and activated users can see links]
Of Polish origin, Sgt Konrad Rygiel had received French citizenship less than three months ago. Aged 28, single, he enlisted in the Foreign Legion in May 2002. After his initial training in Castelnaudary, his results allowed him to join 2°REP in Calvi where he quickly became part of the best. He was first assigned to 1°Cie, specialised in urban warfare. In 2004, he joined the GCP (Groupe de Commandos Parachutistes) and attained the rank of Sergeant in 2007. He had arrived in Afghanistan in January for his second tour in the country. He had also previously served twice in Côte d'Ivoire and in Djibouti.

G'day Stoeng,
well the sergeant KIA was a legionnaire doing his duty and would probably have wished for such a death (if it was unavoudable). But it is still sad for both his comrades in arms and possibly his family. I'm sure he will be missed by his legion battalion.
